Just want to introduce a neat(windows based, donation-ware) software to SBAF
    http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/

It's complicated but it really allows for you to get more routing and control over your sound devices.

Thanks for the suggestion about foobar 2000 for Android.

I just got back from a walk with Suzanne Vega, and she sang the whole "Days of Open Hand" cd via foobar on my Moto g 3rd gen. Nice upgrade in sound with my setup vs Onkyo HF. More air, cleaner and more natural across the board. Made the Onkyo sound a bit like running thorough a pretty tubey amp in comparison.

    thanks

Just found another player called resonic, it's very light on computer resource. 38mb of memory foot print( window 10 taskmanger), cpu usage ~1%, new beta has wasapi support. It has really ultra fast time seek. supports headphone crossfeed.

Any recommendations for free music players on Mac? Audirvana is not exactly cheap for a college student like me.

Vox used to be pretty good but they've integrated some paid cloud storage service into it that's annoying. If you can get around that there it's OK, since so many people are happy with iTunes there aren't an abundance of alternatives. Check out Clementine and Tomahawk.

Damn. Audirvarna is the only one with a selectable software upsampler. All of the ones you recommended just either lets the OS or the DAC handle it. Ok, gotta hang on with the Audirvana trial until my Modi Multibit arrives. Vox it is then. The UI is kinda too contemporary for me. Audirvana's just too freaking perfect. If it weren't for that price....

Another one to add to your check out list is VLC. Sounds good and is free.

The JRiver is made for Mac too.
Even though the GUI is 99% Win like.
It plays very nice and it upsamples to PCM/DXD and DSD!
Even though the Audirvana Plus is the better player in terms of "Hi-Fi righteousness" I find myself always to return to JRiver (now on it's MC22 edition).
It feels more natural and musical in a way while the A+ is more "monitor" like...
Another plus to JR for me is its Android remote! I am an Android guy and Damien (of A+) does not have in his plans to develop an Android remote for Audirvana.

For sure both are great players and I will keep, support and use them both!!

I use jRiver on Windows and linux and Media Monkey on windows for Apple free ipod classic control. I would not allow iTunes anywhere close to my music files on any device.

I haven't used it but you might want to check out BitPerfect on the Mac App Store which basically uses iTunes for everything but playback. You don't get the same level of control but it's like $10.

Am bit surprise there is little love for Android.

Although it is AND STILL a hit and miss on compatibility. But I believe it is a valid and very cost effective platform. It gives a run for the money on my PC running Jriver 22 w/ Izotope Ozone Advanced plugin.

With UAPP (USB Audio Player Pro) giving support to play bitperfect and native DSD. I think it has surpassed JRiver in SQ.

Setting it on an Android media box (Himedia Q10 Pro) w/ an 8tb HD on it. It could be a very cost effective media server. Plays 2160/4K 60p 10bit videos, and your DSD256 materials.

JRiver MC22 here with no up-sampling or audio enhancements. I use iZotope Ozone 7 plugin for EQ and for clip protection.

What are you using in Ozone 7 for clip protection? Thanks!

On iZotope's eq, listen to some tracks. There are two level sliders on the right, just watch the decibel levels that they stay in the green and peak yellow, If the level peaks in red, lower the level sliders so that your levels don't peak above yellow, you would want to keep decibel levels in the green.

@cooperpwc - what are you using for your source (i.e. JRiver, Foobar, etc.)? I use JRiver MC22. JRiver has clip protection options in it if you use that as well.

It looks like you're running it through compression and the maximizer, which does psychoacoustically shaped limiting. So those are certainly enhancements.

No, I was just showing those screens to show some possible ways to prevent clipping. I do not use those normally, just EQ.

@The Alchemist, thanks! That is what I am already doing so cool. In my case, I am adjusting the output sliders since reducing the input then diminishes the effect of the dynamic equalizer on my slice at 6200 hz. I am happy with my settings after much tinkering so I leave as is and prevent the clipping at the end of the chain.

I am using Foobar (Wasapi output), but I also use Ozone 7 via VST Host and Virtual Cable to EQ music films in VLC Media player and even for YouTube videos. So a single clipping solution within Ozone 7 is convenient for me.

I normally use my Raspberry Pi, but I did recently get a copy of Audirvana+ for my Macbook. I'm converting my music to DSD128 playing out through my GO2a (balanced out to the Jotunheim) and it sounds pretty darned good. I still prefer SPDIF out to the Modi Multibit but for a USB setup I think it's tasty.
