So, did you apply the blu-tack first and then placed the swab on top of it?

Actually, I found the issue. The issue was seal was not great in my ear canal. Typical novice mistake...

I changed the tip from small to medium and it is now much better... Bass quantity has improved and treble harshness is now a bit less...Overall, sound is much fuller now...and I like the sound out of this IEM a lot now. :)
I do not usually use silicon tips but use comply tips because it provides better seal and less irritating...

I order Comply tips and it is on its way. Once I receive it, will replace with comply tips. Hope it does not change sound sig too much...

Hi James. I forgot to thank you for recommending this IEM. If it wasn't you, I wouldn't have known this hidden gem IEM. Thank you, James.

So here is the Blu Tak mod for the Fostex TE02n. I'll let the experts describe what the mods entail, since I have no idea.

The stock TE02n is the grey line.

It's pretty darn good! More "monitor" neutral than Andromeda which is like personal audio room neutral. I mean, these things are dirt cheap.

Look like it's more than just blu-tack. Is there some kind of foam surrounding it also?

    Here is the Smurf Mod:
    1. Use a pin to remove metal plate over nozzle
    2. Apply Hifiman style filter over nozzle
    3. Apply a tiny ball of blu-tack on top of the Hifiman filter. Make sure you have clearance all the way around it.

Would the RE400 filter be appropriate?

    Yes, that should work.

Oh.. No. I must been doing it wrong. I put blu-tak on the middle of nozzle plastic cross bar and put strip of filter on top.... Do I put blu-tak on top of filter? If so, doesn't blu-tak fall off from filter?

From the photo that Marvey posted, it looks like he cut filter out in the middle and put blu-tak if I understood correctly and blu-tak amount he applied is huge~~~~

The smurf mod is different from the earlier mod being discussed by James444.

Edit: The blu-tack just sticks to the Hifiman filter. You could knock it off when rolling tips but it will stay once you leave the tips alone.

Thank you for clarification. Does Smurf mod makes the sound warmer when James444 mod makes brighter & more analytical?

In comparison, yes, it feels a tiny bit warmer due to smoothing out the lower treble peaks. It's been a while since I've heard them but I remember it slowing the bass down just a hair too for a bit more decay. The Fostex bass is very speedy.

Just want to say thanks for this thread. I bought a pair based on the recommendations, and these are delivering.

So far I've implemented the James444 mod, and am using sony hybrid tips.
Difference is that instead of using alcohol swabs, I'm using 3M micropore tape (2 layers)

At first it was still a little sizzly, but I've found that 'sibilance' and 'sound staging' has really improved with 'burn in' (IMHO,YMMV,etc.) I still would like to reduce the top-end a little (I still find these to be fatiguing at higher volumes) so I've ordered some foam tips to compensate for that.

Besides swapping tips, I think the last mod to contemplate doing would be the drilling out the rear vent to 1mm. Any suggestions for what to drill with, and how to drill?

    Thanks again.
