I'm taking the initiative, following Kunlun's advice, to start a watch thread here on SBAF. :)

I'll start with my Omega Speedmaster Perpetual Calendar Chronograph and some other Schiit.

The moon phase works fine aesthetically on your Jaeger because it's behind the second hand. It just adds a little something, like wearing cuff-links.

On Shem's Omega, it's fine for the opposite reason: there's so much going on, it can't get in the way. It might've looked strange if that spot lacked a complication.

I appreciate that you are going through your thought process with these, may we do it with the watch I'm thinking about?

I've had people tell me, "moonphase, it balances the dial" and others say "no moonphase, the dial is more balanced".

Out of 140 people polled (I did this on two watch websites, it's only a mild case of autism, I swear), 57% chose moonphase, but my mom and a stylish woman I know, both chose no moonphase, basically statistically even then!

I'll post some pictures below. All comments welcome!

It's great to get some input from others, but at the end of the day it's your watch... Which one do you like?

Well, they are both nice! I have a minor leaning to the moon, but there is a big price difference and a mint non-moonphase is available pre-owned for a reasonable number of thousands less. Plus, hearing other people's take is helpful.

Cough, so, which one looks better to you and why?

In the past I always picked as many complications as I could get! I have a few wonderful grande complications. I find myself now leaning towards more simple looks, not sure why the clean look is more appealing to me now. It might just be that my eyes aren't as good as they were and I don't get to enjoy the details of a really busy watch face.

Both are lovely time pieces. I lean towards the moon phase (if I had the money for it) as I agree it balances things and in this case does not make things too busy.

    That's my 2 cents :)

Absolutely! The moonphase does look a little more balanced. But the overall impression and intended use is worth considering too. Without moonphase, it's consistent because all the complications use hands and/or numbers. Its relative simplicity makes it more understated and formal. Whether that makes it more versatile or less depends on how you usually dress. You already own a more formal watch--but maybe you like formal watches?

I'm not taken with this moonphase because its corner cuts down into the numbers at an angle instead of being a curve in the line like the complications on either side of it. I think I'd like it if the maker had put the moonphase on the top half of the dial so it could make a similar curve. But I'm nuts about these little inconsistencies when it comes to watches. My queen cat likes the moonphase; she thinks it's more suited to guys our age.

Try doing a revealed preferences test. How do you feel if you have to have it, you're forced to wear it? How do you feel if you can't have it, you're not allowed to wear it?

I am biased toward the moon phase but that's because I am an astronomy geek. My current Casio watch has moon phase as well as tides. The tide function comes in handy a lot in Bretagne where the sea can go back a couple miles.

I love moonphases -- it's my favorite complication.

Ooh, a revealed preferences test! Awesome. I appreciate your asking the queen cat as well.

@Cspirou thanks for your take as well! Post a picture of your casio, if you like!

Nice FC and Moonwatch with Moon! FC has really carved out a niche for itself and that Omega manages to be busy but completely legible for the main hands, it's a good look. Do you use the chronograph?

Yes, I use the chronographs on my watches that have them for things like making tea. :) It's one of the few ways one can interact with one's watch, aside from manual winding (as my Speedy Pros are). I have a thing for Speedmasters.

This seems like a nice chronograph.

It's entirely in-house in its movement, despite rumors to the contrary!

My favorite is the Speedmaster Aventurine Moonphase, perhaps tied with the Speedmaster Perpetual. :)
