    I would love to have a super solid thunderbolt -> AES / PCMCIA output adapter. This ethernet thing is a nice solution, but thunderbolt is essentially like an external PCIe card. It'd cut out this ethernet middle-man and would have none of the drawbacks of USB Audio. I know Lynx has something, but I think it's just for USB

    @jexby At least the SQ didn't change on me. :p

    @Madaboutaudio Dunno, haven't heard RedNet. Send me one and I'll let ya know! I'd just rather not f**k with PC audio these days. RedNet seems comparatively complicated. Also my PC is probably full of noise gremlins.

    Nope. Get a thunderbolt PCI-E enclosure and stuff an AES16e or E22 in there. Both are tested with external thunderbolt enclosures. Stop fannying about with USB.

    Has anyone tried this? I mean, all the stars are aligned for this to be very impressive, but it'd be nice to hear it.

    What about PCI-E to BNC for Gungnir Multibit? Don't want to spend $1000 for a digital converter. I'm currently using a Steinberg mr816x via firewire then spdif coax to Gungnir Multibit.

    Yes this does work and is one of the best ways to get music out of the brain box. Look at Magma and Sonnet expansion chassis.

    @zerodeefex

    How about bypassing USB completely via using Lynx E22 AES audio interface card? Is that a good idea in your opinion? It's cheaper solution than a Rednet D16.

    @OJneg has an AES16e and Marv has it right now.

    I think @velvetx is using the E22.

    You butts are going to drive up the eBay prices soon. I missed an AES16e for $435 the other day.

    @Madaboutaudio that's what we're suggesting.

    great recommendations!
    one a new Mac is in the fold, going to try the Magma route plus an AES16e card.

    will look for a cable runs from that card to AES input on Yggdrasil....

    As far as I am concerned, you guys are not running Mutecs. The modifications are intrusive, require minor reworking of the chassis and internal boards, and thus invalidating the warranty. The LPS is yet an entirely other issue. Different power supplies do sound different.

    I feel that "Mutec 3 + LPS" is a little bit too casual. You can't buy a random LPS and plug it into the Mutec to get the sound you guys have. This is basically a @MisterRogers Franken-Mutec that you guys are using.

    I'm on it. Coming to the South Bay soon, Thunderbolt -> E22 -> AES -> Yggdrasil. If this is promising, I can build a Sigma-11 12V LPS later.

    BTW: it looks like the E22 supports an optional word clock input and its OSX drivers are explicitly qualified for Thunderbolt enclosure usage, too. Stars: aligned.

    Well yes, though the approach I took is quite reversible. pop out my 3D printed connector block, pop in the stock one, plug it in, and remove my +/- leads (soldered to +/- posts under the switching board). Looks and works as stock. I certain have a bias and use Reflektor-D's built specifically for digital use. Your point is quite valid though; LPS's do vary in sonics as they vary in design, components, etc.

    Thanks for doing some leg work, I can't wait to a comparo. The E22 also does SPDIF, right? I'd love to hear it on the DACute as well.

    Crap. Editing post and then lost original content.

    Anyway, the E22 isn't thunderbolt compatible (for us Mac users) and according to the AES16 FAQ it cannot be used to connect to SPDIF devices.

    That's where the Mutec comes in. :) Or you can get a AES to coax transformer. Most receivers will have no problem deciphering the SPDIF from the AES.

    P.S. Might be good to start a new thread. I will be posting my official Mutec impressions in a few minutes.

    Yes. There are breakout cables for AES and SPDIF. And I want to hear that DACute myself ASAP ! !

    EDIT: It might be interesting also to evaluate:

    E22 (SPDIF) -> DACute
    against
    E22 (AES) -> Mutec (SPDIF out) -> DACute.
