Today I passed over the Focal Utopias to Bill-P. On the way he let me hear his modded Denon AH-D5000s. I listened to two songs at his place: Get Lucky (Random Access Memory) and Money (Pink Floyd) - had to hit the road cuz family was waiting for me in the car. From Get Lucky I got a sense that these were warm but not bassy cans. These are the first Fostex bio-cellulose driver based cans that sound relatively neutral to me, and that is a major achievement. From Money I got a sense of some of the resolution these cans can pull. It was surprisingly good.

I told Bill-P right there that while I felt the cans were warm, the tuning was definitively neutral. There was not the usual brightness that I've experienced in the past with the Fostex kilo-buck cans. As I'm writing this I'm enjoying this low-fi Youtube video:

I feel issues with brightness would immediately appear with above AV-linky if these cans had severe peaks in the treble area. None of that. Bass has plenty of impact, but it's not overbearing. It does not mask detail. The mods on these cans are masterfully done.

    Doing more listening.

Just in case, here is a picture of how these cans look like:

Congratulations Bill-P! I still remember what you did with those DT770s I heard at one of the meets. That was amazing too.

There seems to be some channel imbalance. But TBH it didn't bother me.

    Compare to Fostex TH600:

Would it be possible to measure the TH600's with the D5000 pads? I use THX00 pads (and foam rings), which appear to be the same as what I had on my D7000 back in the day, on my TH600 and, to my ears, it balances it out a bit my bringing down the bass and treble and making the mids sound more present. I wonder if measurements will bear this out.

Unfortunately I no longer have the TH600s. The comparo above was done using TH600 measurements done in the past.

However, pads do make a difference in many headphones, and I feel this might very well be the case with these cans.

I would contact @Bill-P to inquire about the modifications he performed on the Denons.

Haha, thanks for the impressions and measurements! :)

I took out the foam rings that were deteriorating in these phones, and replaced them with papers (stuffed like 30 or so layers in order to replicate the same density as before).

Interesting to see that troughs in FR have ringing in CSD. I wonder if those ridges mask the troughs?

Nulls in FR that turn out as ridges in CSD = severe peakage. Basically there's a sharp nasty peak at 9kHz.

Could indeed be a nasty in the 9 kHz area.

@Bill-P, there is indeed a nasty around 9 kHz. Some of the songs above I was using did not show this problem, but some electronic (lo-fi) music does seem to have some issues with some tsss-tsss-tsss passages.

For reference, here is a lo-fi song that seems to display this issue as the song starts (errr... IMO):

I'm not using the linky above to show awesome sound (though I do like the song - cuz good ol' party days now gone). Bad, so-so, and so forth recordings sometimes can pin-point issues better for me.

For most songs, this (9 kHz stuff) does not bother me that much though. And I feel you nailed the tuning.

A song that I feel has some issues as well, but much less and is much more enjoyable with these cans to me might be this one:

Hey - I had a THX00 and a D2000 together for a while - The opening on the THX pads is quite a bit smaller than on the Denons. The smaller THX pad did make the D2000 sound better - the mids were more present - bass was tighter - the sound had more body. The pad made the Denon sound more like a THX00. I don't have a measuring rig but the difference in the pads types was considerable and easy to distinguish. Unfortunately my ears didn't fit well in the THX pads!

That is a good point. I dunno about the THXes, but the pads @Bill-P has on these Denons are awesomely comfy and fit my ears well.

Yeah, I tried TH-X00 pads and those pads, and ultimately settled with those. TH-X00 pads kinda... sit on your ears rather than going all around. Those pads go around.

And thanks for the very detailed impressions!! Honestly, I was trying to tune those toward neutrality because the stock sound was... exactly as Tyll described it. V-shaped, with something in the upper mid and mid-treble that annoys.

Based on measurements and impressions, I think I largely took care of the upper mid, but the mid-treble is still there. Still, this is good news.

Will post a guide on this when I get it back.

Like I said. These are the best headphones I heard using the Fostex bio-cellulose driver. Congratz!

Which pads are those? (Or are you referring to the stock D5000 pads?)

    Thanks, Ultra!!

    And I'm using these pads:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UBRVSNA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're pretty close to stock pads. Stock pads still a bit thicker, I think, but not by much. My measurements show just a tiny little bit of difference.

The main point is still the replacement of the circular foam piece. I think you can try to cut toilet paper circles and stuff them in there instead. I needed about 30 layers but depending on your taste, you can tune those.

Can you post how the DT 770 were moded? :)

There are some measurements about this headphone modded?
I am quite interested, there are one of the most comfortable headphones on the market (closed).

    Thanks. :)

I don't have them with me. It basically came down to this: There were stock DT700s in one table, and @Bill-P 's, and @Bill-P 's were awesome relative to the stock. @Bill-P may have some details on how he went about them.

@Bill-P with foam ring you are referring to the ring that is visible once you remove the pads right?

I have some D2000s and would be inclined to experiment a bit with them. So if you have any further ideas let me know.
