Gelocks has done it again!

DT1770 Pro in da house. These cans look awesome. They are a little heavier than I expected and that's probably because the headband seems to be made of spring steel (instead of aluminum). The whole headphone has been Batmanized in black. One gets to pick what kind of pads to use: velour or thick leatherette. The edge of the cans have a small "tooth" that facilitates pad interchange.

The headband is well cushioned and fairly comfortable. The interior of the cups is roomy and isolates relatively well. Not much to complain about aesthetics.

These cans are somewhat tight though, and overtime one may develop some fatigue.

So how about the sound? :Violin:

These are not as bright as the DT990, but they are not precisely laid back in the lower treble and the mids are pretty weird. They are bassy cans, but bass is IMO not clean nor articulate. Something is up with this "Tesla" driver technology that is not working out.

Beyer says "A triple-layer compound membrane in the DT 1770 PRO reduces unwanted partial vibrations to allow a previously unknown level of brilliance in the reproduction of overtones" >reference<. IMO they need to tame those unknown levels of brilliance. These are also a bit edgy.

    Beyer states THD is < 0.05% (1 mW / 500 Hz). I get about < 0.3% (90dBSPL / 500 Hz).

These are selling for like $600. IMO, for $75 the Takstar Pro80 is not only cheaper, but better in almost every way (better extension, less wonky, less edgy, sounds better, more comfy).

I no like these cans (SQ). But they do look awesome.

They also seem to have some propensity to distort in the mids.

Beyer clearly needs to ditch the Tesla crap. Not one good thing has come out of Beyer since introduction of Tesla. At some point somebody on the engineering team said they want sharp and incisive sound signature, but all Beyer Tesla lineup are doing that treble is what they are after totally wrong.

the whole tesla thing was just a response to the hd800 to be honest, it seems like they just rushed something to market to compete in that market. still looking forward to seeing the t1v2 measurements though, hopefully marv gets it soon

And I'm guessing they poured a whole ton of money into it, so now they can't just drop it and move on. I owned the T5p once. I returned it one week after. It quite literally would give me headaches to listen to.

Yes. Not a lot of full size stock Beyers I like.

Looks like they could be great if you EQ'd out the huge dip in the mids, but $600? No thanks.

Hard to equalize dips. They may be a little positional dependent, and raise distortion if adding a gain. Note the mids already have a bit of distortion as it is.

Yeah. Ideally you want to get a headphone with as smooth a response as possible with effortless bass and treble extension with low distortion, then EQ it.

This headphone is a mess. Shows severe cup coloration with the huge lower mid-dip.

Well I guess i dodged that bullet. Back to thinking about the Shure SRH-1540 for a portable, closed set.

If you want the SRH-1540, I got a pretty good price emailing [email protected] . They're the same company as RecycleBiz on ebay. Sorry for the off-topic.

Had a chance to hear these recently at a meet. I liked them(I like beyers though), but to me they sounded like a solid $250-300 headphone , not $600.

    I have :D

Check out the Takstar Pro 80. It may not be your cup of tea, but I liked it much better and it's cheaper (w cheaper materials though). Similar design, except the Takstar cup is not exactly a cricle.

Both the Takstar Pro 80 and the DT1770 are actually not my favorite headphones. But if one likes an approximate of what the DT1770 provides then the Takstar should deliver better performance IMO.

That said, to me both are a bit edgy in the treble. Both of them are somewhat bassy. I would say the DT1770 are a little more weird, even considering that the Takstar Pro 80 I heard had a little channel imbalance.

It's not necesarily that they are forward or analytical. They are just a bit artificial. The DT1770 more so.

The Takstar is about $70. If you like and the original owner of the Takstar likes, it maybe possible to coordinate a loaner on it. (shut, just realized you are in Australia)

It's sometimes remarkable how similar the Takstar line is to the Beyer line. Sound is similarlish as well, though I preferred the Takstar sound to the Beyers I heard (even if I really didn't like the Takstar that much).
