Looking to compile HD650 Mod's / tweaks that work well. The HD650 is obviously very well liked here, so there must be some standard things that everyone does to improve stock sound (if even slightly). The quarter mod - re cabeling - add or remove damping material - etc.

Sorry about that - I should be more mindful.

Is anyone using upgrades cables, or are the stock ones adequate?

The stock HD650 cables are very good. They don't look like anything special on the outside, but the wiring is very high quality inside. I even recommend that people terminate the stock cables if they need 4-pin balanced termination rather than buy new fancy ones.

Yeah the stock HD 650 cable is excellent unlike the awful HD 600 one. Did Sennheiser honestly think anyone would be using a 3.5mm portable jack?

^erm, with the advent of Geek Out V1...TRS 3.5mm jack/termination is justified (IMO).

Wtih the GO V2...TRRS 3.5mm is definitely justified.
    I will re-terminate my HD600/HD650 cables to TRRS 3.5mm after I listened to Marv's TRRS modded HD650 from a GO V2.

That is how <marked> the differences are & how viable a 3.5mm TRRS termination can be with the right DAC/Amp.

How many people are going to use a non-portable, high impedance open headphone with a portable DAC/AMP? Not many. Sennheiser would be stupid to make the default cable terminate in a 3.5mm jack. Oh wait they did as they're cheap. 3.5mm portable jacks break so easily, even the ones rated for more insertion cycles. Remember those are clean insertions. They can't handle abuse at all. I've wrecked several HD 25 cables before the two year warranties are up.

^I don't expect them to make any 3.5mm TRS or TRRS balanced cables for the HD800. We will need to do that ourselves.
But the HD600 cable does have a removable 1/4" metal adapter built onto it. Many people are surprised the first time they try to take it off and find a 3.5mm plug underneath. I'm going to try my first hand at DIY cabling to convert some HD6X0 cables to 3.5mm TRRS termination (and to length for pocketable use).
Already have a custom cable for my Enigmas to 3.5mm TRRS & an adapter that works from my HD800 4-Pin XLR cable.
