It may be related to the peak with a max around 11 kHz after the null at 5 kHz. First reflection happens around 85 us -> 11.7 kHz

Using a parametric equalizer model to fill the null and flatten the peak seems to reduce that particular issue:

FR after equalization on top of the light blue line:

    EQ_after_fr.png

    IR before correction:

    No_EQ_ir.png

IR after correction with reduced 85 us "bounce":

    EQ_ir.png

Overlapped IR plots (equalized shows more clearly the reduction - dunno how to change colors in this mode yet):

    EQ_ir_overlapped.png

IMO it's a system control issue. Mechanical issues may be controlled with some electrical conditions, up to a certain point. And assuming what we are looking at reflects accurately whats going on.

That is really interesting, I didn't expected the HE1000 showing such ringing. I tried these headphones very quickly though. Thank you for the contribution @ultrabike and, by the way, did you heared this ringing between 4k-5k and 9k-10k ?

TBH I didn't hear these at the meet because the laptop I brought was the hand-me-down that nobody uses (I usually even measure stuff w another laptop). There was a rig right next to me that I could have used, but @Ryu's rig was down at the time. I heard another wild sample at another meet and I thought they were a little lively and weird. But that's as far as I go. I did not spend time with them at home or something like that such that I could give a more elaborate set of impressions.

I can tell you the owner didn't think much of them. And that's an understatement.

Yeah, that's something I've also heard I got to say. I didn't spent that much time with them too though. But for instance the LCD2 caught my attention faster than this one. I will dig a but into that topic. Thanks anyway for the measurements.

Thanks for the measurements, ultra! That last bit of brightness (12.5KHz?) seems to bother a few folks at the meet, while some others didn't notice it. I certainly didn't notice it as much, but I've also been working to smooth it out.

Will send the HE-5 to you again early next week for another round of measurements, and get some more in-depth impressions if you don't mind. :)

If you decided to avoid buying from a company because of a bad experience/review you found online about that company, you wouldn't be able to buy anything ever again.

Hey guys, sorry to post on a sort of inactive thread, but I have a question about the Hifiman measurements done here, specifically the HE-560 vs the HE-400i. On here, the measurements show that the HE-400i has a pretty big peak at 7-9 Khz, while the HE-560 has no peak at all in that area. The measurements at innerfidelity show hardly any difference in that peak between the he-400i and HE-560:

    http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/HiFiMANHE4002014.pdf
    http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/HiFiMANHE5602014.pdf

(The HE-560 is most likely the pre-production version, as it was measured in 2014)

So, any thoughts about why there is such a large difference in measurements here than others? Could it just be the pads perhaps?

Could be pads. I'd look at CSDs to confirm existence of ringy peaks. Nasty peaks will end up looking like ridges. FR measurements can be deceptive sometimes.

Anyone have any measurements of the HE1000 V2? So far, I like them a lot more than the originals, as they fix the mid dip and seem to have better detail resolution.

Focus pad have perforated leather on the inside, Focus A pad are a velour material on the earside and underside. They are also thinner than the Focus pads.

I'd be interested in that too. I sold my Utopia's and bought a HEKv2. Not quite the detail and punch of the Utopia, but a much more pleasant and balanced listening experience to my ears. Better low end, I think, and without the excessive treble energy that the Utopia seems to have at times. Also does not have the forward 'edginess' that made the Utopias fatiguing for me.

I would like to see Tyll (and others) compare Utopia / LCD-4 / HEKv2.

Given Hifiman's deep discounts on the HE-560 and HE-400i, I'm tempted to try the 560 to see how it stacks up to myHE-500. However, I wonder if anyone is hearing rumblings of newer iterations of these headphones being released. This type of discount, although not entirely uncommon for Hifiman, always makes me think they are trying to get rid of stock before the release of newer models.

I wouldn't be too worried - unless they make something identical to the HE-X at the $750 price range. The deal on the 560 is pretty good, but if you are happy with the 500, I would hold out. The 500 and 560 both require some tweaks and well planned front ends to please (IMO). I prefer the 560 to the 500, but I know some people are the opposite.

Speaking of Hifiman's build I've had my HE 4 since like 2013 or so... no issues yet

Thanks for the advice. It seems like people were pretty split on which they preferred, the 560 or the 500, with some even preferring the 400i. I'm a sucker for a good deal on a headphone though, and sometimes just really want to demo these things, which I can't really do where I live.
