The consensus is the same for the Iron Maiden reissues.

However there are still some who say the original UK pressings are still the best.

Iron Maiden is a little more complex, in that there are some fantastic US masterings that may be preferable over the UK, for example the first US pressings of Number of the Beast and Live After Death. I seem to recall the DMM from the US of Somewhere In Time also being very highly regarded.

I appreciate the correction. The hardest part is trying to figure out what each persons reference is, or what they actually hear (if anything at all).

That's a good point, people are listening for different qualities that they prioritize.

Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely. All analog recording. It sounds fantastic.

Those big and juicy guitars on Weezer's blue album, I get chills just thinking about them :) Great production all the way and one of my references.

I have In Rainbows in that limited (?) box edition with the album on 2 x 180gr vinyl + CD and the bonus disc. Very often I have problems with too hot masters, but not with this album's CD version. I don't find the vinyl to sound better, really. But yeah, I have a very basic Pro-Ject Debut turntable system.

I'm going to order that Mofi 1 step Santana Abraxas. I want to use the Santana version of Oye Como Va for DJ stuff and Fremer's record recommendations have yet to let me down.

    Will post a needledrop.

There's a big discussion of that 1 step master on the SHF. Personally I wouldn't spend $100 on any copy of Abraxas, but I could imagine buying a 1 step master of some other albums I really love.

God, I went back to that SHF thread on the 1-step Abraxas, it's 90 pages of people talking about how they ordered ten copies and what numbers they got and 90% of them are saying they're not even going to open them to listen to it. People are literally begging for reviews on the sound. If I could pay someone to track down and slap all these people I would.

I understand the collectible aspect of records and that this type of release will draw in the people most obsessed with that, but f**k, at the end of the day it's a record and if you're not buying it to listen to it, why even bother?

I reaaaaaly don't like it when people buy records as "investments". These things are made to be enjoyed and if you take good care of them (and your turntable/cartridge setup isn't a POS) they will still be just as great 50 years later.

One example is used vinyl I get from Japan is usually in awesome shape because the Japanese (mostly) take great care of their stuff. Another example is that I've been using my AP re-issue copy of Duke Ellington - Masterpieces to break in my cartridge because side A is 26 minutes long. That side now has well over 100 plays on it and it still plays as good as the first time; and this is a record with huge dynamic swings and a ton of super quiet parts so you will absolutely notice any imperfections.

Anyhow... pulled the trigger on the Abraxas + some other stuff from the Acoustic Sounds store. ETA is a bit uncertain; might be a few weeks as the Acoustic sounds store is waiting on stock. I'll make a Youtube video Fremer style when I get it.

By the way, none of what I said was hyperbole. People were bragging about how they had ordered 10 copies, most posts from people who did open it had a line like, "And of course I bought a backup to keep sealed and opened the higher number one". To me shit like that does a serious harm to the vinyl community. But then I feel the same way whenever I see people loading up on something limited because they think they can make a few extra bucks off it later.

If you're looking for newer rock adn roll releases, and you like rockabilly Nick Waterhouse's CD's' sound quite good in my experience, and the music is a lot of fun! Esperanza Spalding's new album (Emily's D+Evolution) is kind of jazz-inspired Rock and has great sonics, and you might check out some of Poi Dog Pondering's more recent adn 90's stuff. Decent sonics adn fun jam band music.

There is a wealth of great information at stevehoffman.tv. There is a great deal of noise there as well (55,000 members and no moderation/concern for S/N).

The following is a copy and paste of the people I follow. I tried to take out the people that I follow for reasons other than mastering info. Some are LP specialists, some CD/Digital, some overlap. I did not try to separate these. I didn't clean up their stats because I was lazy about that. It took me years to identify these members as valuable providers of information. Don't know if anyone is interested, but I thought I'd offer this info anyway.

I don't know, it does keep up the demand which will increase motivation for continued supply.

With older albums, pre-1980-ties era the mono-recordings collectors boxes are usually good. The Rolling Stones Mono Box is so tempting right now...

You can't go wrong with "The Beatles in Mono" LP box. All analog, great mastering and (much more often than not) pressings.

Increased supply will reduce demand. There are plenty of people on there complaining about labels who reissued limited editions years after the first run because it lowered the value of their first run copies.
