Dilemma. Au revoir HD800M? Transient response can be fatifuing, even without wild treble. Especially at 10pm, with pyjamas and slow songs.

Well everyone here knows how much I'm loving my pair even after only 6 days! I hope you enjoy them. Going to practice with the Dynamat a bit tonight...

        Ye, I don't expect 800 to be genre-master. Got it because I own a fun (Fostex-like) CIEM.

Then I dropped it & stepped on one shell. Even carpeted floor couldn't save it from my duck foot.

I feel you. I broke my elbow skiing, except I wasn't. I was standing there in skis, lost focus, panicked, fell. Screamed like Keanu in Point Break...

Tried SDR upside-down, similar to @Serious HD800X. Might be just placebo, but I swear I hear more 4kHz region.

Done EQing HD800 SBAF+SDR. This thing is gonna put serious fight with HD650. We'll see...

The most problematic part of modded HD800 isn't treble peaks. It's 3-5 kHz dip. And it's the reason behind HD650 order.

Just realized used HD800 I bought from eBay is numbered 008XX, yet no paint chip or scratch whatsoever. Must be kept like a trophy.

The industry should pay more attention to music improvement. Modern recordings are going South, in contrast of better & better TOTL gears.

You're forgetting that vast majority of people listen via systems/headphones/earbuds tuned for the brickwalled max-compressed mastering. Loudness rules, catering to most common denominator, not the least.

Finally, HD800 is listenable with modern recording & EDM. SDR+SBAF+tube rolling+EQ, as I'm so cheap & can't afford (near) TOTL DACs & amps.

For the first time I wish I had HD6X0. EDM+HD800 (even modded+Orange Globe)=God bless your ears. Literally.

Bugle Boy over Orange Globe. Tube rolling is noticeable but has limit on Valhalla 2. Is $55 BB pair a good spend? Personally, yes. (cont.)

Because stock tubes sandy mid & treble bothers me. Orange Globe sounds too overdamped. Valhalla 2 + BB are good enough - no more rolling.

Amperex Orange Globe for HD800, no question. Bugle Boy, Valhalla 2 are sibilance-guns. BB/stock + SBAF might work at expense of soundstage.

OG is really listenable even without SBAF. So musical to the point every song becomes lullaby.

Yeah OG are nice for minimizing the piercing 800 treble, but I rarely have them in my mjolnir 2 because they make other transducers too dull

4-hour Amperex Globe burn-in+SBAF+SDR vs Val2 stock: losses some sparkle (exp. treble), less yet more impactful bass, smooth gorgeous mid.

the detail is still there. It's just less prominent and the mids really sound phenomenal.

A day with SBAF mod attached on HD800. Better tonality across spectrum is a bliss. Wish the mod didn't dramatically shrink soundstage.

What's your source & amp? The change is really noticeable on my setup, especially the diffusion.

Tried SBAF mod: more balanced tonality at expense of soundstage. HD600-ing the HD800, roughly. Waiting for SDR to arrive.

@bazelio Yeah. Hopefully SDR costs a little. I found out that Sonarworks is the middle ground between stock & SBAF.

I don't care for the wooly sound you get with some of these mods. Personal preference. Careful with Sonarworks though... I'm pretty convinced it has undesirable side effects also. I've found that it changes the sound even in bypass mode, which is unacceptable to me.

I didn't say wooly & I don't mind the tonality. It's just the soundstage. I set SW at 45%. Still bright, but sounds big & diffused. Good thing about SBAF mod is it is easy to attach & deattach.

Macbook Toslink/Schiit Wyrd vs Amperex/Jotunheim?RbPi/Digi+ looks neat, but cumbersome for streaming Tidal.
