I thought "gaming" console... until I decided to take a look. In my youth we called these things radiograms. I don't know, but it was probably a brand name that became generic.
As did we in Brit-influenced NZ (contraction of radio-gramophone). My impression is that the 'console table' is/was a more common furniture item (or name for that item) in North America, leading to its wider adoption for cabinet + electronics here.
