I went there for work a few times years ago (maybe 15 years ago). So this may be out of date. I liked Waterloo Records. A nice selection of new and used LPs and CDs. A few good used record stores on Guadalupe, across from the university. 6th Street music district was great for live music. I could stand on the sidewalk and sample what was playing in any given bar, then decide if I wanted to go in.
6th Street - I listened to a lot of Blues. What I liked the most was a lot of performers seemed to have something going that set them apart from other Blues music. Like "outside" touches on the guitar playing and other stuff that I can't quite recall.
Tons of great restaurants, music, shopping,etc.. I would definitely get some top notch Texas style BBQ. Don't go just anywhere though. You'll wait hours to get Franklin so go to La Barbecue or Micklethwait Craft Meats. It will likely change your conception of what BBQ is. If you just randomly choose a place you might end up with something mediocre by comparison.
I actually live in Waco, not Austin, but we have land outside of town so I've spent a lot of time there. @Erroneous is the guy to ask about the best places for record-shopping and other stuff to do. Waterloo is good for used CD's and records but there's a place I haven't had the chance to check out yet called End of an Ear. What are you into? What do you like to do?
Franklin BBQ is probably great but has a long line. Try going to LA BBQ instead. If you live in a place where you don't have access to Mexican food then definitely hit up some Mexican spots.
Also there's a local chain called Whataburger which I love and consider superior to In N Out. I don't know if they have a Shipley's donuts in Austin but stop by if you see one
Hopefully there'd still be local folks around when I'm there to show me around for the better food places, but I'll make note of those you guys mentioned, perhaps I'll just queue on the weekends.
I'm interested in mainly audio and food, since I have a (still increasing) backlog of books I need to catch up with before adding more stuff to the collection.
