Context here: am secretly hoping I'll never notice the difference in newer gear. I won't notice it in most of my music anyway, but if I turn it down (trying to avoid more hearing damage) then surely differences between gear will become even less obvious. Am I on the right track?

You are on the right track if and when you find gear that sounds good without turning it up. Err... as well, loud is an option when you feel you need it.

Remember that salesmen turn the volume up to make you think that stuff is good.

Low Dynamic Range will sound less fatiguing. Actually, low DR will probably sound more enjoyable if the volume level is low enough. Music that would get lost in the silence, will be audible.
