Apparent differences noted between Eitr & mobo Toslink: Eitr-much more distinct instrument/channel separation; more treble with a little "hard edge" in highest highs. Toslink-more cohesive & centered image; more dynamic; nicer tone; less treble presence but smoother at the top.

Listening notes above were using vintage Counterpoint DA-10 R2R DAC -> Gilmore Lite mk2 / Meier Corda Classic ff -> LCD-2.2.

I agree, the Eitr is ultimately handicapped by the USB connection.

Never had the eitr myself but how can it be the second coming of digital audio and worse than mobo optical at the same time?

Inputs also matter. This is a 20+ year old DAC? No idea of input quality.

That said, Eitr/Gen 5 only fixes so much shitty USB. Jason declared it was the 2nd-coming for marketing reasons, but Mike didn’t. Hence the new USB solution that’s pending.

True, inputs matter, and that may confine the value of my observation to this particular assortment of gear. I should have noted that with the vintage DAC, the Eitr has to go through an RCA/BNC adaptor, which is a handicap.

I’ve previously noticed differences between Toslink/Eitr through a Modi Multibit, and found myself with the same preference, but those were more similar and the differences more subtle.

If you enjoy it more, that's awesome. Just because it's hyped beyond all Schiit, especially here, doesn't actually mean it's the second-coming.
