Straight line stage integrated amps (w/ no DAC or phono) are pretty uncommon these days, and why pay for something you don't want or need. Going on the used market would up your options. Class D is better now than it was, some people like it and I wouldnt rule it out as an option in that price range. If you want a compact class AB unit with a linear power supply, maybe look for an older used Bryston B60, it's one that has no dac or phono stage. I had one a long time ago that I got new from Canadian dealer for $1100, they go for 3K now. It's has a neutral tonal balance, very clean and good detail, which seems to be a sound youre looking for.

The "British sound" is an over generalization. Just as west coast/east coast was. But not to say there isn't some truth in either. To me the UK sound places rhythmic drive and coherence above all else, exemplified in Naim amps and Rega turntables/speakers. These are among the top UK audio companies, still based and made there.
The west coast east coast tag came from the brighter more upbeat sound of JBL (west coast) versus the smoother more relaxed sound of KLH and AR (east coast)....3 of the top US speaker companies at the time.

Bit of a random necro bump here donchathink?

This is a good recommendation, and B60's can be found for decent prices used. I've gone through several Brystons and the 2B/B60 has stuck with me so far.

I have a NAD C316BEE. Using it with a pair of PSB Alpha B1's for the tv room. Quite like the sound. Good imaging. Balanced sound signature. Not audio nirvana, but for the price very good sound.
