He's definitely talking about apple. The fact that he mentioned the employees as being "mentally gifted" means he was poking fun at the "Genius" title they give them.

Fortunately all of those things can be done by most any modern smart phone. The question is longevity, battery life, support, right-to-repair, etc. I have been on the edge of buying an iPhone for years because I really hate how every Samsung phone I've owned has gone to shit within a year. If the iPhone still had a headphone jack it would be even more tempting. Unfortunately for me there's no perfect solution.

It also seems all phone manufacturers are behind the curtain making the older phones worse with updates. Like you said; Planned Obsolescence.

    Whoops!

I'm about as likely to buy a turntable as I am to buy a smartphone. Guess I am a goober. Ok with that.

I hear that. I remember when many smartphones had replaceable batteries. Now almost none have and you are lucky if you get two years from your battery before you have to replace your phone.

I was using a Nexus 6P which started over heating and could only hold half a days charge at only 2 years old. All it needed was a new battery but instead I had to buy a new phone and transfer all my data over. Planned obsolescence means shelling out over $650 about every two years.

LOL!!! @baldr did make sure Sol news was subliminally buried somewhere in his post.

I admit I was tempted to zero in on the Sol in that post, but since I'm just starting out building an analogue rig (anal-log, poop-log, Schiit? Couldn't help it, sorry) jumping in on something priced in the neighbourhood of the Gungnir DS seems ill-advised. I'm hyped as the dickens for it, but if the mad Geniuses (non-derogatory use I swear to G.O.L.B.) manage to bring it down to Bifrost Multibit price as they'd originally projected I may be tempted to overextend myself... which is about all I've done so far in this hobby. Gottverdammt.

Besides, who wouldn't bite at the opportunity to rant about an overpriced phone? :p

Real talk: the Sol apparently kills everything under $1000 based on @purr1n et al's impressions, but speaking from a more budget-minded individual's perspective (yes yes, WT ever loving hell am I doing looking at vinyl if I'm that stingy and poor, I know), how much better is it than tables around the $600, all-in mark?

The USB might end up being the biggest news in the long run. I believe @baldr has mentioned in the past that it will allow them to interface with DAC chips that they previously couldn't and should lead to some new interesting low cost/ high performance new DACs in the future.

SOL is big news, but to me the USB is indeed the biggest news.

I dunno if they are doing this through the FPGA or uP. But if it's a uP one potentially has lower cost, lower power, and increased flexibility. If one has full control over the FW, one can do a lot of custom things with GPIO and serial interfaces. It opens a lot of doors like number of channels, I/O configurations, speed, and formats supported... You name it.

A full on multi-channel receiver becomes possible. A multi-channel interface ADC/DAC becomes possible. Mike's not-approved DSD becomes possible (basically a f**k you, now we can, to all others that support this). User custom DSP, depending on uP, becomes possible with some driver work (can load your favorite FIR compensation to your Schiit for your lack-luster headphone/speaker). Why hell, with sufficient power and I/O from the uP, may even put a screen with fake VU-meters. May even see a Schitt DAP.

Locked phones are the OG mobile phone fuckery. It should be illegal now that there are no real subsidies.

All phones have a limited hardware spec but the manufacturers need to sell next years model and one way to do that is with shiny new features in the software. Generally speaking you’re usually ok upgrading to the major revision after the one that came with your device but two major revisions is rolling the dice. The next release of iOS out in the next week or so is one of the rare exceptions as they’d been getting so much flack for decreasing software quality they put off new features (mostly) in favor of performance and stability so anyone who can upgrade to iOS 12 should probably do it.

A trip to the Apple store is hit or miss, and entirely dependent on the person you’re talking to just like any retail experience.

Phone bs aside the new in-house usb sounds great, the more you can vertically integrate with bespoke tech (like said fruit company) the more advantages you have over competitors who are reliant on off the shelf parts.

There were three points in my last (too long) post.
    1. That Schiit will never have the dog shit customer service I encountered to repair my less than 1 year old very expensive phone.
    2. Mech production parts are beginning to arrive for the Sol.
    3. We dood it on USB. Finally, our own USB implementation for USB which will allow us to interface many, many, more multibit DACs which have never been used for audio. (Read: freedom from DS burden imposed by the arrogance of audio chip designers.)

smart phones, I'll probably never own one.

I'm reminded of what the NSA etc calls such devices, mobile servers, ones they have the hacking tools for, not to mention the back doors built into the cpu's and the OS's.

    Just a thought or 2.

Do you really think abstaining from a smart phone protects you in any way? Do you have internet in your home? And a computer?

They are computers (in fact I'm lousy at using them as phones: I press all the wrong buttons, phone the wrong people, or cut calls unintentionally) but that does not mean that a person has to make them the centre of their digital life.

I suppose one can even do quite a lot with a phone that is not linked to a google account. Or even, doesn't have any "Gapps." Me? I sold my soul cheap: a modicum of convenience. I don't have a clue where I was last Tuesday, but Google does. Downside? Google does.

On topic... Excited to see the Sol and all the goodies at RMAF, @baldr! Are you guys going to have 2 areas/rooms again? I missed the room last year, because I didn't know about it.
