Ban for creation of an AE during a ban. Your main ban is extended to April. You do this again and you're perma'ed. No one owes you an explanation so stop PMing folks. All the mods have come to the conclusion that you lack so much self-awareness that it's not worth engaging with you.

I found them to have A LOT of sizzle up top and really lacked any low end.

This might be a reach, but have you heard the not quite but almost powered versions, PB42X? (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NXAEPDC/)

I'm looking for something small and inexpensive to use as computer speakers.

Good review site for small speakers, straight forward language, no flowery BS.
He'd fit in well here methinks. Fun when he rips St. Andrew Jones......

This might take you a little longer to find what you are looking for, but if you have any high end audio stores around you, check out their used section. I've found quite a few great deals that way. Also you can check out places like The Salvation Army and other thrift stores, there's estate sales as well.

Has anyone heard the SPL Performer s800 amp? As lovely as it is, my quad 405 doesn't quite manage it with my speakers at high volumes (86db, 4ohm) so I've been eyeing some alternatives. I'm currently building a small list of not too expensive power amps that I want to audition so I'm looking around for some info on a few candidates to listen to but I've found a vanishingly low amount of impressions about the Performer online.

It needs to be stuff I can somehow audition locally in one of my countries, so far I've an eye on the vidar, simaudio moon 330a, vincent sp-991 plus and the hegel h190 so that's the ballpark I'm targeting. I don't know anything about them other than that what I read and that I have places I can try them.

I just got a pair of Harbeth Monitor 30.2s. The rest of the system is an original Schiit Freya, a Gungnir Multibit, and two of Marv's latest favourite amp.

I'd like to go with an all Schiit system, so am considering the Aegir or Vidar. The Harbeths are 85db efficient, and I listen in the near field.

    Would one Aegir be enough?

At that sensitivity you're going to need Vidar, probably two.

He said nearfield, so definitely wouldn’t need dual Vidars. Also the 30.2s are actually underrated for sensitivity (maybe the first speaker ever??) and is actually around 87dB according Stereophile.

@Mr Rick I actually think a single Aegir nearfield would probably be fine, but to be sure of things you could do either a single Vidar or dual Aegirs. Could always try a single Aegir first and see how it goes as well.

Edit: I do want to note though, Aegir and Vidar have different presentations on many levels including bass slam and warmth. Have you read the impressions and are aware of this?

Yes, I have read the impressions, and that confuses me. So far, the Harbeths are ruthlessly revealing. Any chance the Aegir might tone that down just a bit?

yeah, the 30.2 is 87db efficient, with a very easy load. in nearfield, 20 WPC is plenty. I used a 15 wpc el84 tube amp with my shl5plus and it was more then enough

    great speakers, im jealous

for someone who's basically brand new to having a stereo system, has only heard a few "good" audio setups, and currently uses a 45 tube power amp, is it worth considering an aegir? Is its 10-20wpc enough of a bump from ~2wpc with 8ohm / 98db omega speakers (~7' speaker distance in a 10x13' room) to really have a good comparison of SS vs tube power? Or should I be looking to go another order of magnitude up in power and find something like that crown cdi 1000 in the other thread?

All of these questions stemming from my never-ending "not leaving well enough alone" 'itis. Specifically I've been wondering if/how much my power amp might be leaving on the table in being able to properly drive my speakers. I'm not a bass-head, prefer musical to hit-me-in-the-chest bass, so I guess that's what led me to aegir in the first place. I'm not a loud listener, probably max of ~80-85db and more generally in the mid to low 70s, but do see my amp brick-walling a bit when i turn up my pre.

Properly powering speakers isn't just about being able to drive them to ear bleeding levels. A good/better power amp will bring another level of slam/dynamics/soundstage. It's not always about having chest thumping bass, but to me more about the quality of the bass, slam, detail, etc.

Thanks. I do understand this isn't just an amplitude problem, thought I mentioned that with not listening loud, but more of a response issue. I can definitely hear the easier to drive higher frequencies increasing in amplitude faster than the lower ones that take more power when I start to increase volumes beyond my "normal" levels. The slam/dynamics also start to muddy up a little I feel like, but without having a solid comparison, I may just be guessing. Soundstage and presence right now is incredible based on my very small sample size.

This is not a matter of watts but presentation. I would strongly encourage you to audition the Aegir first.

Sounds like you'd benefit from an amp with more juice

Since @purr1n may be the only one to have heard both, he’s probably the best to weigh in here. I did notice the Crowns had a higher odd order harmonic profile, and if you’re running as monoblocks, this may actually enhance this aspect. Aegir as I understand it would likely be a better match I think, but definitely better to get Marv’s feelings here. The Harbeths in generally shouldn’t be “ruthless” sounding, esp with Gungnir and Freya, so me tends to think it’s the amps.
