The love is there. It's tough to make a top 10 list. I could make 10 lists of 10 and be much happier. For me Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils and Dust are favorites.

Interesting thread. Some of these were chosen strictly for the music and some because they connect me with a certain time and/or event in my life. Regardless, for some reason I never seem to tire of them.

    In no particular order:
    1. Bill Evans - Waltz for Debbie
    2. David Sanborn - Closer
    3. Joni Mitchell - Blue
    4. Joe Sample - Rainbow Seeker
    5. Michael Franks - The Art of Tea
    6. Flim and the BB's - Tricycle
    7. Kenny Rankin - A Song for You
    8. Fourplay - Heartfelt
    9. Steely Dan - Aja
    10. J.D. Souther - Natural History

Yeah, it really is. Everyone I had to leave out feels like a betrayal. No Venetian Snares? Tori Amos? Ministry? Logistics? What about the Gunther Wand recording of Bruckner's 5th? James? Suzanne Vega? And so it goes.

The more I read these lists, the more I think I didn't do the best job making mine...

But I'm loving the tips for finding more good music.

This thread prompted me to spend a fun few hours going through Roon making a list of all my favourite albums. I figured I'd be pretty ruthless as a top ten is a tricky thing to pin down. Ended up with 62 on my list. Oops. Can we have a top ten per sub-genre? :)

Oh well, gun to my head, top ten in no particular order...

    Sugar - Copper Blue
Brian Eno - Another Green World
Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
    Del Amitri - Waking Hours
    Weezer - Blue album
Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame
    Chicago Transit Authority - S/T
    Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
Tori Amos - Boys for Pele
    Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

Bollocks to it, here's the rest :) ....

So hard to narrow this down, but here goes.......

Joni Mitchell - Blue - 35 minutes of sheer perfection
Dire Straits - Dire Straits - the first and best 'Straits album
Bob Dylan - Time Out of Mind - a rumination on ageing with some of best of Dylan's love songs
Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball - a career defining release with Emmy's voice aching and soaring
Led Zeppelin - IV - the album that took metal mainstream
Moondance - Van Morrison - Astal Weeks may be better, but love Van's lyricism on this disc
No Frontiers - Mary Black - Irish contemporary folk at its best
Befriended - Innocence Mission - small intimate music with the wonderful fragility of Karen Peris's vocals
Leige and Lief - Fairport Convention - the album that kicked off the English Folk rock movement and the amazing voice of Sandy Denny
Luck of the Draw - Bonnie Raitt - great blues/rock from a great slide guitarist

    1. Arvo Pärt - In Principio
    2. Arvo Pärt - Symphony no. 3 (1971, Neeme Järvi)
    3. Tool - Lateralus (vinyl version, unknown rip)
    4. Puscifer - ''C''
    5. Miles Davis - Bitches brew
    6. W.A Mozart Requiem
    7. Massive Attack - Mezzanine
    8. Portishead - Dummy
    9. Archive - You all look the same to me (not best eva recording quality, but the drive is superb)
    10. Porcupine Tree - Octane twisted (2012 version is best)

Top 5 in order of preference, others equal.

I'm afraid if it would come to that I would fold and crab half of the list full of A.Pärt
and other half mix of some other orchestra + Lateralus.

When I heard "A Day In The Life" I really started liking the Beatles. Before I preferred everything by Chuck Berry. Feel good Pop is easy. Intellectual pop that is not pretentious is difficult and "A Day In The Life" really makes you think. That song changed my opinion on them.

    1. Michael Hurley/The Unholy Modal Rounders/Jeffrey Frederick & The Clamtones - Have Moicy!
    2. Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits Vol. II
    3. Nirvana - MTV Unplugged
    4. Otis Redding - The Immortal Otis Redding
    5. Various Artists - The Indestructible Beat of Soweto
    6. M.I.A. - Kala
    7. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
    8. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
    9. The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones, Now!
    10. Chuck Berry - The Great Twenty-Eight

These are records I've liked best over the years. I know everybody who picks Bob Dylan is going to vote for Blonde on Blonde or Blood on the Tracks, but Greatest Hits Vol. II happens to be a record I've played obsessively for nearly ten years now. I might have selected other Beatles records, but a final comparison with Rubber Soul is decisive. I don't own the original album until quite recently, but I've played Yesterday... and Today quite a lot. Exile on Main St. is a great record, very well constructed and thoughtful, but the emotions The Rolling Stones, Now first stimulated in me are unrivaled.

I decided to leave out box sets because they aren't casual kind of records, although I love every song on The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs and I can listen to Johnny Cash's Legend or Ray Charles' Genius & Soul in one sitting.

    In alphabetical order

    • The Black Dahlia Murder - Ritual
    • Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth
    • The Human Abstract - Digital Veil
    • Leprous - Bilateral
    • Muse - Origin of Symmetry
    • Protest the Hero - Scurrilous
    • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
    • Soen - Tellurian
    • Tool - Lateralus
    • Verite - Somewhere in Between

Man, what a struggle to not just make the whole thing metal albums. This is most definitely not a list of my top 10 albums, though all of them are favorites, i made a definite point to try to have some variety as thats something ill want on a desert island

Besides the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I've never heard of any of those groups...much less the albums!

haha most of it is metal, though outside of the first 3 on the list, most of them arent particularly aggressive. Though those first 3 are probably my favorite albums

This is in random order and not a list of what I believe to be my "best" albums... to be honest I've probably overplayed the "best" ones! I think there is something here for every mood...

    Chameleons - Strange Times
    Arcade Fire - Suburbs
    Depeche Mode - Violator
    Tool - Lateralus

    1. Kołakowski / Wykpisz / Korelus - Schönberg
    2. Four Letter Words - Blow
    3. Kaiser, Clov and Harris - Measure Once, Cut Twice
    4. Four Letter Words - Radio Silence
    5. Jaimie Branch - Fly Or Die
    6. Mary Halvorson Octet - Away With You
    7. Martin Küchen - Hellstorm
    8. Steve Coleman - Morphogenisis
    9. Mats Gustafsson & Friends - MG50 Peace And Fire
    10. Matt Piet Trio - Of Sound Mind

I just took 10 quite recent purchases from Bandcamp. (Matt Piet was only allowed once in the list. Very unfair.)

I'd put every single one of my albums on a top10/desert island list. I curate my collection carefully and it's all good.

Well, me being me, this'll have a lot of Bach and Monteverdi, so in no particular order...

    1. Emmanuelle Haim's recording of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo
    2. Rinaldo Alessandrini's recording of Monteverdi's 8th book of madrigals
    3. La Venexiana's recording of Monteverdi's 7th book of madrigals
    4. Joshua Rifkin's recording of Bach's b Minor Mass (the original Nonesuch release with Rifkin's liner notes)*
    5. Paul McCreesh's recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion
    6. Konrad Junghanel's recording of Bach's Actus Tragicus
    7. René Jacob's recording of Heinrich Schütz's Weihnachtshistorie (though Kuijken's recording comes in a close second)
    8. John Eliot Gardiner & Malcom Bilson's recording of Mozart's complete piano concertos
    9. Louis Armstrong's Louis and the Good Book
    10. livetune's Re: Dial (a bit different from the others, but hey, just because I'm mostly into Baroque doesn't mean I can't like Japanese electropop) (Also, had to insert a space into the title to stop ": D" from becoming :D)

If I could pack more, I'd probably throw in some more jazz & pop before adding more classical, but I've got a lot of classical recordings I just couldn't imagine living without.

    * Rifkin's b Minor Mass isn't my favorite recording of the BMM, but Rifkin is kinda my musicological hero, so I'd choose his recording over more recent technically superior recordings by Butt and Junghanel in a heartbeat.
