The love is there. It's tough to make a top 10 list. I could make 10 lists of 10 and be much happier. For me Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils and Dust are favorites.

 

Interesting thread. Some of these were chosen strictly for the music and some because they connect me with a certain time and/or event in my life. Regardless, for some reason I never seem to tire of them.

The more I read these lists, the more I think I didn't do the best job making mine...

But I'm loving the tips for finding more good music.

 

This thread prompted me to spend a fun few hours going through Roon making a list of all my favourite albums. I figured I'd be pretty ruthless as a top ten is a tricky thing to pin down. Ended up with 62 on my list. Oops. Can we have a top ten per sub-genre?

Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball - a career defining release with Emmy's voice aching and soaring
Led Zeppelin - IV - the album that took metal mainstream
Moondance - Van Morrison - Astal Weeks may be better, but love Van's lyricism on this disc
No Frontiers - Mary Black - Irish contemporary folk at its best
Befriended - Innocence Mission - small intimate music with the wonderful fragility of Karen Peris's vocals
Leige and Lief - Fairport Convention - the album that kicked off the English Folk rock movement and the amazing voice of Sandy Denny
Luck of the Draw - Bonnie Raitt - great blues/rock from a great slide guitarist

When I heard "A Day In The Life" I really started liking the Beatles. Before I preferred everything by Chuck Berry. Feel good Pop is easy. Intellectual pop that is not pretentious is difficult and "A Day In The Life" really makes you think. That song changed my opinion on them.

These are records I've liked best over the years. I know everybody who picks Bob Dylan is going to vote for Blonde on Blonde or Blood on the Tracks, but Greatest Hits Vol. II happens to be a record I've played obsessively for nearly ten years now. I might have selected other Beatles records, but a final comparison with Rubber Soul is decisive. I don't own the original album until quite recently, but I've played Yesterday... and Today quite a lot. Exile on Main St. is a great record, very well constructed and thoughtful, but the emotions The Rolling Stones, Now first stimulated in me are unrivaled.

I decided to leave out box sets because they aren't casual kind of records, although I love every song on The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs and I can listen to Johnny Cash's Legend or Ray Charles' Genius & Soul in one sitting.

Man, what a struggle to not just make the whole thing metal albums. This is most definitely not a list of my top 10 albums, though all of them are favorites, i made a definite point to try to have some variety as thats something ill want on a desert island

 

Besides the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I've never heard of any of those groups...much less the albums!

 

haha most of it is metal, though outside of the first 3 on the list, most of them arent particularly aggressive. Though those first 3 are probably my favorite albums

I'd put every single one of my albums on a top10/desert island list. I curate my collection carefully and it's all good.

4. Joshua Rifkin's recording of Bach's b Minor Mass (the original Nonesuch release with Rifkin's liner notes)*
5. Paul McCreesh's recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion
6. Konrad Junghanel's recording of Bach's Actus Tragicus
7. René Jacob's recording of Heinrich Schütz's Weihnachtshistorie (though Kuijken's recording comes in a close second)

If I could pack more, I'd probably throw in some more jazz & pop before adding more classical, but I've got a lot of classical recordings I just couldn't imagine living without.

* Rifkin's b Minor Mass isn't my favorite recording of the BMM, but Rifkin is kinda my musicological hero, so I'd choose his recording over more recent technically superior recordings by Butt and Junghanel in a heartbeat.

 

Man it is oh sooooo hard picking only 10....FOR EV ER!!!!!????!!!... and man am i happy that at least this island has a good clean power source and i ended up being stranded with my headphone rig...just can't believe i forgot all the other music besides these 10 albums!!
