I don't mean to offend any schiit fan/lovers here but I think Audio-gd are (much?)better bang for the buck product compared to any company really...(but may be I am wrong) what do i know!
Also I am not expert enough to go DIY...still looking for your precious suggestion...

Sure, I don't have anything against opinions but you must have a reason behind that opinion ;)

AGD's prices are much more expensive than a few yrs ago. I don't think M11 ($2k) will sound better than Bifrost Multibit+Copperhead (<1.6k)....anyway, just IMO.....

For that kind of music , I can't think to a better choice than the HD800. The M11 is probably a solid choice. Keep it and take the first opportunity to listen a totl combo ( EC/DNA amp or Apex Teton/pinnacle + Yggdrasil/Gungnir Multibit/Theta/MSB/... ) and see where your M11 sits against the best rigs.

I only heard the HE-9 myself but it is the best SS amp I heard with my HD800.

So you're telling people not to buy anything from Audio-gd and make it sound like it's complete garbage and you're basing that on asumptions and not actual experience? Wow...

that is what the problem is...I can't audition any of EC/DNA amp or Apex Teton/pinnacle stuff here in India.
and when people say HD800 need large voltage swings...what do they mean...I mean how do I know from the specs of an amp that if it will be capable of providing that voltage swing to the drivers.
Here is the specs of Audio-gd M11:

    Output Level
Headphone output : 19V RMS (balance , max)

Preamp Variable output : 10V RMS (balance, max)

DAC Variable output : 5 V RMS (balance, max)

    ACSS: 1.2MA+1.2MA

    Headphone amp output power ability
    (Only for >15 ohm headphone.)
    Balanced mode
    16000MW / 25 ohm
    8000MW / 50 ohm
    4000MW / 100 ohm
    1300MW / 300 ohm
    650 MW / 600 ohm

    Output impedance
      1 ohm / Headphone output
    1 ohm / DAC output

    Input Sensitivity
    0.5 Vp-p(75 Ohms, Coaxial)
    19 dBm (Optical)

70% of me is convinced that I won't get a better deal @ $2000 than my M11 but the rest 30% is worried that what if the M11 & HD800 combo do not go well together and spits out ear scratching highs...you know that synergy stuff...

Once for all : Buy the HD800 ( or HD800s) , keep your M11 and let your ears judge. You'll find on internet shitloads of people who will tell you that other amps or dacs are better but nothing can't replace your own impressions.

It looks like a difference of about 3dB. That's non-trivial and probably enough to make the 800 palatable for many people, but some would say the peak is actually larger - more like 5-6 dB.

I'll be waiting to see time-domain plots. If that pretty small raw FR is the only difference, I'll probably stick to EQ.

I don't think it's that simple. That 3db reduction is the average of the region from 5.5 to 7K so what could have happened is that the peak at 6k was tuned down by 5-6 db but the frequency response around that peak stayed the same so the change looks less drastic than they actually are. An unsmoothed and unaveraged FR and CSD graph from the messiah would still be required for detailed analysis, though.

My HD800s is already ordered and paid. I'll post some measurements (compared to Stock and Modded HD800) as soon as I'll receive it.

How did you order it? It still says "available soon" on the Sennheiser site.

Good point. Senn's bucket-based FR plots can be very misleading.

In any case, it seems that the improvement is limited to the HD800's biggest and pretty much only flaw - the 6/6.5k peak.
