That's a common misconception. It's actually an old slavic slang for "how much ya got" when someone asks for the price of something.

Enough to pay for the custom hot-gluing, but not enough for the rest!

I have liked the looks of Don Garber's fi pre-amplifiers and amplifiers since I first saw them in Art Dudley's 'Listener' magazine.

According to the internet, this is called the 'fi 300B Monoblocks'. But I've seen some others called 'fi 300B Monoblocks' that look different. Maybe because fi was a one man shop (IIRC) and Don designed and built all of their stuff himself. Or maybe the names are wrong on some of these web pages. (RIP Don Garber)

    Sounds like one, doesn't it ;) ?

No disrespect to the amp itself of course.

Back in the day, while Brits were buying separate amps and tuners, didn't Americans expect the tuner to come as built-in as the phono stage?

Which Americans? The ones that cared about the sound usually bought separates. At least I did back in the early 80’s once I could afford decent gear.

I'd say more Americans went for a receiver than an integrated amp, IME. There were mainstream stereo stores (everywhere) with shelves and shelves of receivers, a shelf or two of integrated amps and a couple of systems with separates. There were a few High End stores that were basically the opposite. That was the norm where I lived, anyway.

I wanted separates, but could not afford them until a bit later. My first nice amp was a Marantz 1060 integrated. Most of my friends liked the sound of the stereo equipment I chose so they bought the same stuff.

My friends didn't follow me into pre and power amps (along with my tuner). That was a bit niche for young people.

All this was in the early to late 1970s. By the late 1970s / early 1980s it seemed that huge stereo receivers with as many doodads as could fit on the front panel were the asperational electronic thing, at least in magazines and stores.

My stereotypes! :p I'm talking assumptions made over forty years ago on a small island, far, far away. Yes, they may well be askew.

Thanks, @Dino, for filling in the gaps.

Saw one of these guys’ amps reviewed in TAS recently (yes I read TAS, but only for the amp centrefolds I swear!), Started looking on their site, and lordy they’ve got some damn fine designs on there including this one.

Yup, Bakoon gained a lot of recognition for their work. They do very unusually looking and subjectively nice products.
