    What's a "bitter experience" mean?

My Vali 2 does the popping too. Very annoying, but my only real complaint against that amp. Guess I'll have to keep living with it if I upgrade to Lyr 3.

I see. I hear clicks on many DAPs too. But it is not as loud as on the Lyr 3. Given Lyr 3 is much more powerful than those DAPs, I thought the loud pop was normal among desktop amps..

    The click/pop is ear-splitting loud.

I had it happen on one tube. I don't think the tube was good. Does not happen on any of my other tubes.

Why not plugin the headphone after the amp is turned on and unplug before you turn off the amp to avoid any issues?

Nothing wrong with that, especially if you're changing headphones at the same time. But if you tend to listen to one headphone most of the time it's something of a pain. And then I often forget to unplug.

I'll listen tonight to see if it happens on my amp.

I never unplug headphones, but turn the volume all the way down whenever I turn the amp off. And, I usually turn tube amps on well before I intend to listen so the headphones are never on my head when I power up.

Opinion's divided on that one- due to the possibility of a transient short as you plug the jack in. Endless internet arguments, as you'd expect.

The MCTH specifically states to plug in your headphones before turning it on.
(Well the MCTH doesn't but the pamphlet does.)

I occasionally plug in my headphones after turning on (or if I want to switch headphones) and did have a 'pop' once.
I only had to restart the amp though, the protection circuit must have kicked in.

I haven't heard or seen Schiit chime in about that though.

I'll do this as well. Headphones are off of my head when turning on/off so I haven't noticed any pops with the Lyr3.

I suspect relay with a microphonic tube.

Just turned on lyr 3, and did not have such experience at all. I am also suspecting that's a tube-dependent issue.

@Ice-man - your thoughts vs MCTH? I enjoyed your review of the latter, and it'd be good to keep adding to the database of head-to-heads already here.

That depends entirely on the source of said hair, and the type of Follicum. I believe rejecting a pubic hair in ones soup falls under “best practices.”

It's a little early. I've been using the lyr 3 for two days and I"m just about ready to switch back to the CTH and make some comparisons. But here are a few early thoughts. Please take them with a grain of salt though. I've done most of my early listening to the lyr 3 with the new production Tung Sol and the 650.

CTH is liquid and effortlessly smooth. It has great tone. I understand why most of the Cavalli amps have the word "liquid" in them. The lyr 3 is much more transparent and is able to render fine detail in a way that leaves me spellbound. Detail retrieval/plankton is better with the lyr 3.

If you listen to rock music and or lot's of poor recordings, I can see the CTH being a favorite there. But overall, the lyr 3 is the better performer and gives a clearer picture into the recordings. And it does this with it's own "smooth" manner. This is not an amp that jacks up the treble to give an initial wow factor. It simply is able to render fine detail exceptionally well.

IMHO, the lyr is the better amp and clearly so. It's certainly my favorite. But it should be a better amp given that it cost 2x as much as the CTH. At $250 price point the CTH is a very easy recommendation. Not everyone has $500 to spend. I admit I was reluctant to jump on the lyr 3 when it released.

The lyr 3 is now my favorite Schiit amp and probably my favorite amp under $1k. I really like the mjo2 and enjoyed owning it. The lyr 3 is better at a lower price. Plus the tube choices are simplified with only one tube and those being much less expensive for the most part than 6dj8 variants.

Aside: I did some research on tubes for the lyr 3. I didn't want to go crazy spending stupid money on tubes but I did want to add a few relatively nice tubes for an amp that is giving me way more than I expected at this price point. Then I called Brent Jesse to get his opinion. Brent is a cool guy who truly knows his stuff. He listened carefully to my questions and then gave me his best advice based on the budget I gave him. I ended up ordering two tubes from him. A Sylvania 1953 "Bad Boy" mil spec. And then a Ken Rad 6SN7GT - VT-231. Brent offers both a warranty and return policy on the tubes he sells. I'd been bit in the ass too many times buying tubes on ebay and wanted a better option. I'm looking forward to rolling some nice NOS tubes into the lyr 3, but even if they didn't work out for the better I'd still be perfectly happy with the Tung Sol.
