@captkirk I was told to look for a certain amount of power, big transformers, and not to get receivers. I was also given a couple specific recommendations.

This was helpful, but I lost the eBay auction because my last bid didn't go through in time, and the guy selling the used vidar seems to want to keep it in the friends zone, because he never replied to me.

I figured I shouldn't keep asking stuff there because I was polluting the thread, and thought this would be an appropriate place for me to seek further assistance. Trying to figure out which of the shit loads of used amps that seem to qualify are actually good value deals has not been easy...the start of this thread says "go nuts", I thought it would be okay.

I've seen Odyssey khartago and stratos, krell kav 2250, krell kst 100, mark levinson #29, proceed hpa 2, red rose m1 multichannel as all somewhat fitting into my requirements, but almost all have great reviews to the point that I can't tell if they're actually good or not. Some of those might be obvious no goes for other people on here

    Totally fair.

I'd say you did the right thing initially asking in the HE-6 thread. You got answers and suggestions from the enthusiasts that are running the headphone daily and are coming from a place of having gone down the discovery path before - to find what bests pairs with the HE-6.

My point is, these were solid suggestions, so if you can't find something immediately, wait and enjoy what you have until something pops up. If you need something now, or you can't sit idle, go listen to some gear and have fun finding your own solution.

Just received my Sony NW-ZX300A from JB and I was wondering if anyone on here that owns one of these babies has yet performed a firmware upgrade to the latest v2.01 from the Sony site? I am trying to determine if the regular ZX300 firmware will work on the ZX300A so I thought it would ask first (brick fear is real :p) - currently on v1.0.

edit: I took my chances and flashed the fw and I can report that it does indeed work on the A model...thanks anway!

Hey there guys. Following some tips I found a Valhalla 2 in top shape conditions at CAD$450 with socket savers and a pair of extra tubes (GP JJ)

I’d like to know, if sometime can tell me, if the color and / or brushing of the aluminum, matches with the current line up and certain products like Loki, Modi / Modi Multibit, Bifrost.

    Thanks !

The new Gold Lion KT88 showed up today, two matched pairs.

These are supposed to be new but the values on the boxes are quite a bit lower than what I can find online when people measure new GL tubes.

    Ip; Gm
    47; 5100
    49; 5200

    29; 4100
    29; 4000

    Thoughts?

Is there such of thing of a warm sounding closed headphone that's on the fun side for $200-$400? Would just use it at work with Modi 2U and Magni 3.

    Hmm.

You can sometimes find a used ZMF Blackwood for around 400.

There's also a bunch of fashion cans ... Meze 99 works if you wear glasses (otherwise too bassy) , NAD HP50, I'm not really a fan of the sennheiser fashion cans, I'd take the 56789 or whatever the closed 5 series is.

I remember all the cheap closed A-Ts as bright.

NAD HP50 unless you have big ears, in which case Senn HD598Cs if you can find it, HD569 if you can't. All under $200.

I enjoyed the Oppo PM-3 a lot in the time that I had one, though they are tougher to come by now that they've been discontinued. They're on the warm side of neutral (a bit of bass and low mid emphasis, fairly neutral mids and a bit rolled off up top) and pair great with the Magni 3. Very comfortable also.

NAD HP50 or the ZMF Classic (go for the balanced version)

One more thing I want to ask advise on: Avoid the Fostex MD stuff and aim for the ZMF Classic if looking for that type of closed sound?

The X00 (i own a TR @Forza AudioWorks has been making me cables for, and I've gifted 2 TH's) is fun but it's not warm, it's basshead.

I have the Ebony which is the most polite of the three, but you still need to know what you're getting into.

    It's a TH-900 without the trepanning treble.

I have both and the ZMF is absolutely worth the extra cost over the Massdrop.

@Josh83, I have never heard the ZMF Classics but own a pr. of the X00 EBs that I enjoy. What is it you prefer about the ZMFs over the X00s?

    Update:
I bought a Valhalla 2 with extra tubes for CAD$349 (Final).
    Happy about the decision.

Now I have to decide on the DAC, and no, I won’t buy by any means an Eitr or a Wyrd. So I need help deciding about this (Both options includes shipping)

    - Modi 3 + Loki $315 ( +Taxes)
    - Bifrost Multibit Gen5, Used, $465 (+Taxes)

Between the Modi 3 and Bitfrost Multibit, is there such a BIG difference to justify it? The reason why Loki is not present with the Bifrost is because of budget limit.
