Super snobs like me drink directly from the tap on the cask without the drank being cut (most stuff is diluted from 60% to 40% into the bottle).

The good stuff does not need drops of water. Just swirl around in the glass. Just ask @brencho.

Hipster waiters in El Lay have delivered glasses of bourbon with ice, without me requesting so. Those get sent back. I assume that's how most hipsters drink the stuff which is so wrong.

That's why I like shed distilled fusel. It's straight, not mangled with product, usually 58..67%.
Anything below that is probably diluted.
I don't even get it with rocks. It's a waste drinking good whiskey cold, half of the experience goes down never felt.

I'm too broke for the good stuff so a couple drops of water makes the Makers Mark smoother. The fanciest stuff I have is an unopened bottle of Basil Hayden's from my wedding.

Have any of you Scotch-heads tried Fettercairn?

I'm not sure about that, last time I drank whisky straight out of the bottle I ended up being kicked out of the party for breaking a mirror.

Basil Hayden is good stuff that doesn't break the bank. @CEE TEE treated me to a few shots when I was last up in SF.

Maker's with a touch of water is better than it ought to be – that's my regular "no money for good whisky since kids are financial black holes" drink.

Tubes, like whisky, are about finding the right balance of price/performance depending on your budget (especially since both are consumable, but if your tubes don't last way longer than your whisky then something is very wrong).

WE396 could be had at a reasonable price awhile back but at the current going prices they're not worth it; there are still good alternatives out there though. I picked up a 10pc sleeve of 50's D-getter, 5 Star 5670's (GE) which I enjoy every bit as much for less than the price of a pair of WE396, and now I'm set for a decade or two.

EDIT: NVM, just looked up the going price for 50's 5 Star 5670's, they're nearly as inflated as the WE396. Damn hype-fi tube market.

Basil Hayden, Maker's Mark Cask Strength and Macallan Rare Cask are regulars on my shelf.
@spoony has a point. Probably should have an admin move most of this to the appropriate thread.

As a Kentucky boy, albeit with a limited amount of both experience and pallet, I'm a big fan of a nice spicy rye. 1792 single barrel and Knob Creek single barrel 115 are what I'm pouring right now. Nice and hot (but well balanced) with a spicy kick at the finish. A surprisingly good non-KY rye whiskey is the High West Rendezvous Rye from Utah. This probably belongs in a different (i.e. better) thread.

It appears to require a shitload of pricey alcohol to truly appreciate audio.

Pricey alcohol doesn't cost as much as audio gear, and in the case of whiskies, lasts longer than the average time-to-sidegrade interval of the typical audiophile.

It's @purr1n 's fault I have a new headphone toy, which does not disappoint. It may be voiced for Focal but it sounds damn nice with HD800-Jmod.

OK. Time for me to pee on the cereal. Having a better idea of the design of the amp, why does every fiber of my being tell me his amp sounds like ass?
