I received the Verite right while I was evaluating the Utopia, so I had the chance to do a side by side comparison. I have to agree with the Verite being like 95% as good at detail retrieval, but the biggest differences in my opinion are the size of the stage and images, and the slam below 100hz. For reference, I'm running it off an IHA-6 (balanced out). If I could scale the Verite and Utopia comparatively, I'd rate the performance with the flat pads like this:

Detail retrieval - Verite 95% of the Utopia
Speed - Verite is 100% or better than the Utopia (different tuning makes it tough to properly evaluate)
Macrodynamics - Utopia is like 80% of the Verite
Stage - Utopia is 75% of the Verite
Image scale (if that's a thing) - Utopia is 75% of the Verite
Timbre - Utopia is 75% of the Verite

I also feel like the Verite is a bit more mid-forward so that vocals come through with a bit more intensity (in a good way).

With regard to the more 'colored' tuning of the Verite, there are two key areas that I do notice. The 3-4khz dip is a bit strong for me, and there's a 6.9khz dip I can't seem to quite figure out. In any case, I hear the coloration most in cymbals and anything that makes use of splash or sparkle, where boosting those frequencies by a few dB gets it closer to what I'm used to. Overall I think the Utopia has the better frequency response in the treble, but loses out on performance overall (madness I know).

Compared to the Auteur, I find the Verite categorically superior, with a slight exception in that the Auteur has fewer oddities up top. But I do hear a bit more air up top as well with the Verite, so it's not a total EQ fest, just in a few areas like I mentioned. I definitely agree with cskippy that an EQ'd Verite is simply better than the Auteur in every way.

With the pads, I feel like they make a bigger difference in staging and performance than just FR - where the Universe pads cause it to sound not as tight or well extended in the bass, so I'm sticking with the Verite pads for now.

    Edit: removed video.

    Disliked because:

    1. It's youtube -- and your personal channel. It's nearly equivalent to paste a blog link to lure people.
    2. Too long. From sbaf's perspective, any video longer than 2 min is imo allowed for very informative content from credited professionals.

My take is that we don't like people being too lazy not to re-write concise and target-focused paragraphs only for this community.

    A few suggestions:
    • Too much "uhhh" in sentences. I used to do this when speaking, it's hard to overcome.
    • About 29min long. Might be 14 min longer than it had to be.
      • There were many talking points on the build of it and it's comparisons to the Auteur that seemed to drone on. Less is more. Which leads me to...
      • People just want to know your thoughts on the sound. I found myself skipping ahead just to get to that part, because people's attention spans are short. That's why you keep the build and design part brief and on point. Basically, nobody is going to enjoy watching your videos If we have to suffer through 15 minutes of build quality first.
      • Leave the subjective impression part on build and design for the end. Go over the design and build quickly, and at the end put in your opinions and comparisons.
    • Don't compete with your background music, if you have any at all. The piano was a distraction.
    • If you make a mistake while speaking, rerecord it.
As for your post... just throwing up a video without any kind of text does seem a little lazy. I saw you had a whole giant review written on headphone.com. Even taking the intro from that and putting it before your video link would have been appreciated.

Lastly, these guys gave you a little bit of a hard time, and you immediately deleted your video link. Take the criticism and get better from it. Blow off the other stuff. This is the internet man. Got to have a thick skin. Especially here.

    Good night!

I appreciate the feedback! I added some timestamps to make it easier to navigate. Ya, I deleted it because I just want to follow the rules/guidelines. I've put a written post there instead.

What an irresistible opportunity for the rant which has been bubbling up in me for months now, when watching youtube videos! And seeing as how the thread is already in HTWFAIF, here goes...

Oh, those useless Umms and Ahhs and other useless and meaningless links words! My most hated, currently, is going to go ahead and which some people say multiple times in one sentence.

What sales presenters, miscellaneous public speakers, and makers of youtube videos do not realise, is that the audience ends up counting that stuff out of boredom and misses the content. I still remember the salesman to whom everything was, "Very simply..." but I can't remember anything else he said.

But, these days, there's youtube and everybody is a TV star. And no-one needs to learn to be a TV star. Not that the professionals do much better. TV reporters and presenters that wave their hands around need a year or two in drama school!

Utterly off topic. But hey, if it saves just one child....

(from being a bad youtube presenter :D)

Now I'm going to (go ahead and) cut a jackfruit.

It's a challenge for sure (in addition to "y'know, like, etc.".). Improving on those aspects is something I'm trying to focus on and ideally it gets there. I have a certain idea for how I want my channel to appear as well as the style and presentation of the videos, specifically that they're not the 'vlogger' sort of thing. I get that they're popular for a reason but I personally rarely enjoy them. The biggest obstacle for properly producing videos with an appropriate structure, script, shotlist etc. is time. So spending more time up front in preparation, and ideally less time in editing.

I took a class on presentation a long time ago, where we had to speak for 15 minutes on a random topic we weren't able to prepare for. It's extremely difficult to do without those 'linking' utterances, but so important at the same time.

Common ones I see these days is the long winded and rambling kind of youtube videos, the ones with a million jump cuts, and the well spoken and short cut versions. I have done a few video myself that I cringe when I rewatch since I use too many filler words and its too long.

A former tv host now and online tech reviewer friend of ours put it simply as some advice for me. Its not hard to make a long review, it is hard to make a good but short review.

On the flipside, I find stuff like unbox therapy a bit pointless, even though it does well. I guess I'm currently focused on stuff I'd want to watch, but the reality is that I likely have more niche preferences than the audience. That's going to take some figuring out still.

Unbox Therapy actually made me consider the Bose Soundwear for a bit earlier today.

    Kill it with fire.

(Eh, I appreciate the additional impressions and the Galaxy Fold stuff is interesting to me. UT really is more about the quirky host and crew than it is straight up tech news and reviews, kinda like LTT.)

Public speaking is a tough 'mode' to get into. Every 2 second pause feels like it's a minuet long. It's tough to remember to breathe and take your time.

I've never tried the YouTube thing, but I imagine having topics or bullet points (NOT a whole script) that you can talk coherently about for a minuet or two would be helpful. Shoot one segment, pause, shore up, and shoot the next. Seems like an approach like that can work...good luck.

Eh, if I'm gonna eat corporate marketing I'd like to have a few chuckles along the way. It's also more interesting than MKBHD's vids from a quirk standpoint.

I'm only just now remembering that Linus is Canadian HAHA.

As far as gear review tech channels go I'd actually plug Erica Griffin. She rambles a bit but her obsession with big screen phones aside I find her content pretty informative.

I like making unboxing videos, they are low effort and I don't have to edit much. Not super interesting to watch but handy for situations where I am not sure what accessories came in the package.
