I pray my plasma doesn't die in the next year or two. I don't want to fork over the $$ for equivalent OLED.

There you have it guys. Lern 2 sEttings.

On a serious note, I’ve adjusted my TV settings after the episode and rewatched the first 20 minutes. It helped but I’m at the limitations of my LCD TV.

It was more just that I didn't use enough of and/or the right words to clarify my point. :)

lol, how about filming something taking into account most people's current TV settings? Last I checked HBO isnt cheap, now I have to adjust my TV based on the show im watching?

Thats what I did and it still looked bad.

Good media is mastered for properly calibrated screens. That's just the way shit works. No one does it otherwise. Should all music be mastered with a huge bass roll off because most people listen to headphones with a shit ton of bass? C'mon now. (Different being people don't seem to care that all they can hear is wub wub with music.)

Why don't you go complain about how out of the box TV settings are A) garbage and B) put in place to "wow" the commoners on Best Buy's show room floor? It's a shitty sales tactic that preys on ignorance while knowingly obliterating how anything on your TV is meant to be viewed. It's literally defeating the primary purpose of any good TV or display device just to stand out on a floor.

Or, shit, maybe the dragons should have been designed so that their silhouettes have defining features, in preparation for scenes where limited lighting might make it hard to differentiate them. Even in good scenes, I can usually only remember that one is a bit bigger and darker than the others.

I'm not really too concerned that I can't catch every sliver of action in battle scenes like this, because the get the implication the chaos is meant to be portrayed as such. Nerds can fugly-brighten and slow down gifs if they have nothing better to do with their time. (Guess what, I still figured out what happened with the dragons through context that came with watching the rest of the episode.)

Or maybe how we pay good money, to big corporations, for cable and/or streaming services that have poor reliability, low bitrate, and seem unable to consistently hit even a 1080p resolution? I think complaints would have been minimized were this a 4K HDR stream from Prime or Netflix.

This isn't a problem with how they mastered the content necessarily. There are too many other factors, all of which have been big problems for a long, long time. I guess it just took a brain-dead episode of GoT to make the masses care. Too bad their rage is focused in the wrong direction.

Come on now, compare whats comparable. I can love Grado and hate the HD800 and you can feel the opposite. Chances are youre not going to love a CRT screen while I love OLED just because you like scanlines.

I got no problem putting the blame on netflix, hbo, streaming in general, but if the producer is going to blame my TV settings, im going to call him out on his bullshit.

My TV and the settings ive personally applied to it looks great for the majority of the media I watch. Not for this GoT episode, for which I spent a good 10 mins fiddling with the settings, and it still didnt look good.

People can love frame interpolation. Like Grado, it’s an abomination. Or they run the coolest setting on the TV with the sharpness all the way up. People do it and like it. Or they’re just straight ignorant and think it’s normal/good. It’s comparable to headphones. I will fight you if you like Grado and fight you if you have poor display calibration.

A less compressed source would have done wonders for the episode. Anyone with half decent eyes and properly calibrated display, of which I assume you are not one given you kept manually fiddling with your settings, could see compression artifacts by far were the biggest problem here. Totally expected given what they were trying to portray.

So you could argue that guy shouldn’t have focused so much on TV settings, but it’s a legit issue. And it would suck to see material get screwed over due to crappy factory TV settings and compression artifacts.

I rewatched it tonight and definitely less banding and pixelation but it's still there.

That one scene with the two dragons above the clouds with the moon in the background before they both dive down, is absolutely beautiful.

If you hate the show so much why don't you just stop watching it? The last several seasons have been quite entertaining and, based on the numbers reported watching, a lot of people agree. Is everything perfect? No, of course not. But nothing ever is. One man's "brain dead" is another man's "brilliant". I enjoyed the last episode immensely and jump out of my chair shouting "Yes!" when Arya killed the Night King. I wasn't expecting Arya to be the one to do it and I think it is a brilliant twist compared to what I did expect.

Life is too damn short to "rage" about the direction an HBO series takes....

Episode was indeed a bit too dark even on my calibrated plasma in a dark room. Compression artifacts were obvious as well; the posterization was quite severe. Otherwise a better episode then the first two with some memorable scenes but still decidedly meh.

Can't wait for my 65" Oled to arrive so i can see those artifacts even better and wonder why i spent all this money....

I borrowed a x-rite i1 display pro from my work back in 2017 and used it to get a decent calibration on my TV. Using Dell ultrasharp monitors daily, I know what a properly calibrated display is supposed to look like. The TV colors look good but the old LED just can't hang when it comes to black levels like the latest GoT episode.

I paid a professional calibrator to do the plasma, those calibration devices and software are expensive. And i agree once you're used to a calibrated display it is hard to go back. I'll get the Oled calibrated as well.

I've never much liked calibrated displays to 6500k. It's far too cold for my tastes. I usually sit around the 57-5800k mark.
