Just came home from John Wick 3. Its like John Wick 1 & 2 turned up to 11!
I kinda think they took it too far with certain things. But if you like alot of action thats so absurd that it becomes funny, then go watch John Wick!(all of them ofc)

As someone who actually had a ball watching Apocalypse in theatres (though I definitely agree that it could stand to be edited down some), damn now I'm hyped for it. Need to go read some harsh reviews to keep my expectations down.

Saw Jim Jarmusch's THE DEAD DON'T DIE last night. This is one extremely droll film. The vibe is flat as a pancake, yet insane & weirdly amusing. As with many of his films, it's a blast watching all the big name cameos--a festival of underacting.

Can't say this is great--or even above average--cinema, but it certainly is entertaining. I'm an Adam Driver fan, so this was especially fun.

It's an unusual film that makes all its participants look even better as actors for having participated, no matter how silly the material...the "Jarmusch Effect."

Jarmusch's style straddles the line between dull and fascinating. It's a high wire act he miraculously manages to pull off time and time again.

I'm not sure how Jarmusch does it. Neither the direction or cinematography are in the least "dramatic." The line readings are flat & uninflected. Acting ranges from wooden to semi-naturalistic, but never looks like "performance." And yet outrageous things happen fairly often in these films, w/the outrageousness often not referred to or reacted to by characters. All participants in these films seem to collectively serve as "the straight man" for overt jokes & humor that never manifest themselves. The result of all this is deadpan irony--buckets of it.

My favorite of his films is MYSTERY TRAIN, which tosses together all manner of unrelated strangers, Memphis, and Elvis into a big salad of weirdness. The role by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (the real SJH) is priceless.

My favorite parts of THE DEAD DON'T DIE are:

-- Rosie Perez' uncertain demeanor as TV newscaster (and her voice--always that voice)

-- Tilda Swinton, the most alien, otherworldly of actors, cast as an alien undertaker

-- And the frequent references to Sturgill Thompson's title tune, which everyone seems to know. ST is a real person & this is a terrific old-school country song, just as weird & wonderful as the film itself:

I saw Paterson and don't think the performances were wooden. It was quite a beautiful and inspiring film about finding the poetry in everyday life.

Watched Avengers Endgame in the cinema today. Worth it, impressive.

It gave me the LOTR chills. (Watching that film for the first time, that film is memorable!) LOTR has this old-Hollywood feel to it. Think of Ben-Hur with Charleton Heston. Well Avengers Endgame gave me that feeling.

I recommend seeing the film and yes it is worth the 3 hours and the end credits with extras. It has many plot twists, summarises the M.C.U. stories neatly and has not one bad moment yet it does not feel rushed. This film is a good conclusion to everything that came before it.

In the end you even feel some sympathy for Thanos. Even the villain is appreciated in the story, I like that.

I saw Spider-Man Far From Home on the 4th.

For some background, I really didnt like Homecoming. I dont like douchy IronMan, and i dont like that he got to be Spider-Man's mentor. Homecoming just didnt really feel like a spiderman movie.

So going into FFH, i wasnt expecting a whole lot. But it kind of blew me away. Other than a few parts of some of the larger set piece action scenes, i really enjoyed the entire thing. They did a great job showing the struggle of being a super hero as a teenage boy, way better than their hamfisted attempts in Homecoming.

I also rewatched Homecoming last night, thinking I might like it better now....tl:dr, i did not, i think i disliked it even more.

Agreed. Watched in a theater with in-seat drink service, I never realized how much better movies could be with White Russian milkshakes. If you're in the NYC area, IMO it's worth going a bit out of your way for Alamo draft house.

I like Homecoming enough, but Far From Home is a bit better, an easy Marvel 9/10 for me instead of maybe 8.5/10 for Homecoming. It's tightly wound and the humor is spot on. Both homecoming and Far From Home work for me in the sense that in Homecoming, Peter was a bit cocky, fish out of water, and they needed to set the plot up so he can learn his lesson. in FFH the stakes are higher, his mentor is dead and he has to deal with the physical and emotional fallout. Tom Holland was pretty convincing as both.

I tried to see MIDSOMMER yesterday. Man, did that not work out...I didn't last 15 minutes.

I'd read quite a bit about the film and was expecting the bleak take on relationships & the folly of trusting strangers in foreign lands (well, trusting them to have sane, understandable culture & motives). I knew the male partner in the relationship would be a fatuous dick. What I didn't realize was 2 other things:
    • Both people in the central relationship are unlikable fuckheads, just in different ways: he's weak, passive, overly self-involved; she's weak, overly dependent on opinions of others, a nutjob. You can see it coming that her consciousness will be raised by movie's end & his won't. But at the beginning of the film, that wasn't nearly enough to help me hang in there.
    • And his friends are disgusting. I felt like jumping up on that screen & punching them all out. Real assholes. Again, I know they meet their just rewards later on, but I just couldn't hang in there.
I'm sure this is 100% my problem. Earlier in my life, I spent too much time in bad relationships (giving & receiving) to want to watch this highly annoying relationship for any length of time. So, despite the promising HOUR OF THE WOLF vibe of this production, I bagged it at minute 14.

Best part in what I saw: the bug-eyed face & vomit covered blouse of the sister.

OK, I'm done. Now I'll return to the cheap horror flicks & blood-drenched shoot-'em-ups that comprise 99% of my movie experience.

I had reasons: boredom; work that didn't come in, leaving spare time; a decent Chinese place nearby. Still, I should not have gone to see STUBER. I'll never get back the minutes or brain cells I wasted on it.

STUBER is a comedy that's not funny. It's a buddy film, but these 2 actors don't belong in same hemisphere together. There's much violent slapstick meant to entertain, but I just winced. Neither character is geniuinely likeable or sympathetic.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe others will appreciate this film.

I went to see Ma yesterday, and while I'll admit that it's far from an excellent film (plot progression is all over the place), it did a great job twisting suspense to breaking point. Octavia Spencer is f'ing brilliant in her role, and the lead characters play the part of dumbass kids well—I was ready to give them all frustration noogies for all the gormless decision-making that took place.

No real regrets watching, but I do wish the plot were a bit tighter and had better flow.

For various reasons I never made it to MA, but am delighted Octavia Spencer, one of our best character actors, landed this juicy part. It reminds me a bit of Keith Ledger playing the Joker: this is an inspired, extremely dark part that people will never stop talking about.

Much as I enjoyed Ma I kinda doubt that it'll have the same staying power, if for no other reason than because Batman fanatics overhyped TDK to hell. If just going off performances by Spencer and Ledger then heck yeah she trades blows, but their respective films are too different.
