I just saw the press release about the pi 4 and I ordered two of them for testing. I will need to have a different side plate to accommodate the dual HDMI that’s on the version 4. But once I have them in hand and I can do my own measurements I will draw it up and cut a couple of cases to test.

    Cheers,
    Michael

Just wanted to let everyone know I cannot guarantee that our hat will work with the pi 4 when it first is available. It is my understanding that quite a bit of software is going to have to be updated or at least re-compiled at a minimum. I assume that will include the various audio players that all of us know and love.

Internally we primarily use Volumio and diet pi for testing. I will update this community when I have been able to verify that they work. Until then I would suggest not to buy our hat assuming it will work with the pi 4.

    Cheers,
    Michael

The GPIO and the standoff positions are the same, I assume that the software providers will follow and support Pi4, but it will take some time. Pi 4 is a significant upgrade inside out compare to the upgrade from Pi 2 to Pi 3. Regarding to the hardware change, the position of the USBs and the network RJ45 flipped over. The HDMI changed. Thus the Pi3 cases will not fit Pi4 without modification.

I did not catch the change of USB/ENET. So two new panels for the Pi 4 case. Thanks! :)

    Cheers,

No real reason to get a Pi4 for for audio unless ur doing some major hardware upsampling. Roon & Volumio take almost no resources and I doubt u would notice a difference vs. Pi3.

A bit overkill anyway for a slimmed down audio endpoint, would bug me a bit having all that unused horsepower and extra parts generating noise... a pi3A+ is perfect for that now. The future pi4A+ or piZER04 will be the way to go. It'll be a nice audio serverside upgrade with all the (4GB) ram and ARM72 tho! (LMS/piCore)

Overkill for playback yes, but extra cpu/ram will be pretty useful for database indexing/management and additional usb controllers will finally make external hard drives viable on rpi.

Yep... like I said, serverside. If you're not using 2 pi's you're doing it wrong ;D

The additional RAM should be useful for buffering.

Someone in the Volumio forum reported volumio does not work on the rpi4. Not that I expect it would work w/o an update.

The PI2AES is open for pre-orders now! Delivery time is 1-2 week for the first batch. When these are sold out we will put another batch in, but with a 3-4 week lead time.

    Cheers,
    Michael

Is it only because of software or hardware incompatibilities also? If I order the product today will it be hardware compatible with Pi4 or do I need to buy a new version of the product specifically for Pi4?

    Michael,

At one point, there was discussion on testing the PI2AES against the Allo Signature. Is that still something you can do, now that the PI2AES is ready to go? I would be interested in seeing how the two compare in a direct digital out comparison. Especially at the price advantage of your product over the newly inflated price of the Signature.

I believe it is only software. I have ordered two pi 4 boards to test with, but until I have a working software I won’t be able to be 100% sure. I would suggest you do not buy it if pi 4 compatibility is required.

    Cheers,
    Michael

I do not have access to an Allo signature at this time. I did a quick test of a loaner from SBAF member humanfly. I’ll post that later today. From my tests the Allo with the low noise power supply is a bit lower noise floor than our board. Humanfly has been sent a final version yesterday and hopefully he can do some testing and report back his impressions.

    Cheers,
    Michael

As mentioned here are the Allo Signature Jitter results. Note that 0 second from the bottom is actually 0.5ps

Here is the PI2AES RCA again for comparison.

    And finally, the 502DAC BNC.

Sorry, I am confused. Is there a particular plot you are looking for that we can do?
