This was a classic, no doubt. Other FPS I really liked back in the day:
    Woflenstein
    Doom
    Duke Nukem
    Hexen
    Heretic
    Quake

Verging into late 90's, I liked:
    Redneck Rampage
Star Wars: Dark Forces I and II
    Unreal
    Half Life

Don't forget about Blood and Quake II both of them got fantastic "ports" that allow them to run tweaked on modern systems

There's a 25 year old me who wished he never bought that 92lb beast living on a 6th floor apartment with access only to stairs. That thing was an awkward beast to carry around cause all the weight is in the front due to glass.

It was glorious for a time. Gorgeous colors eclipsed barely by an Artisan I had briefly.

I love gaming on a 240hz monitor now, but outside of a few games that can hit 300FPS+, it's difficult to play some of the newer stuff that can hit 240FPS. First time owning a G-Sync capable monitor and blown away by how smooth gameplay is.

Only downside is the obscene video card prices these days...

I tried the recent remake by the original devs, Overload, with a VR headset. It was amazing- pretty much the perfect game for VR.

Not an FPS game, but speaking of going back in the archives does anyone remember the original Leisure Suit Larry?

I remember the game being pretty awful, but it broke some new ground...

I occasionally lurk on this forum, but thought I'd formally join.

    Just want to say that:

    1. Yes to everything in this thread. It's like an oasis from the extremes out there in this hobby.
    2. I appreciate TomChr taking the time to add his input. I may not share the same perspective but I do understand it and it's great that he offers the products that he does. His responses are reasonable and polite regardless of forum and that's a rarity when discussing opposing views online, be it audio or anything else.

So here's a question. I wandered into the objectivist forum on another audio enthusiast site. The question pertained to timbre of speakers. Specifically timbre matching. I always felt timbre was inherent in the device/transducer producing sound. Is there an objective definition or measurement of timbre? How do you adjust for timbre when setting up a multichannel system? Figured you could answer this reading through your posts. Thanks,

Some of this "timbre" can be objectively shown through the following:
    1. Distortion FFTs
    2. CSDs
    3. Ultrasonic peaks (maybe resulting in IMD)
It's the qualification part which is difficult. And not all can be explained by measurements.

    Examples:
    • Metal tweeters will often have an ultrasonic peak.
    • Metal woofers will have nasty breakups (uneven frequency response leading to a huge peak), but fast decay in its optimal area of use.
    • Paper woofers (in general) will have smoother rolloff once they go past their optimum operating range, but have poorer decay.
    • Ribbon drivers will have specific distortion patterns and higher distortion, but faster decay compared to dome tweeters.
    • Electrostatic and certain planar drivers will have continued very low amplitude ringing after the signal stops, thereby possibly contributing to their less grainy more liquid (or plasticky depending upon your POV) timbre.

Plasma tweeters are perfect, but they poison you and can kill you.

Worth noting that objectivists might be using "timbre" interchangeably with "tone" (i.e. simple frequency reaponse). The distinction is not quite clear even for those in the know. We needed common audio descriptor encyclopedia (for our community) but the project never became finalized.

    Thanks!

I bowed out of the thread quickly when it was clear the poster was more interested in confirming his personal bias and railing against the audiophile snake oil. I get it. Like with everything in life, there are those who chase the extremes. The ones that chase the elusive extra 1% sonic improvements. Likewise, there are those that believe a $100 headphone amp is all you need. I’m somewhere in the middle.
