He's got a better rehab program than I did when I broke both legs. WTF.

    So you're saying it wasn't well-deserved? ;)

Kidding aside, hope the big bork is doing well now!

Messing around the with HDR Manual Mode with the Sony Xperia 1 Smartphone. Focus slightly more on the head than the body. Not perfect, but it's a good shot. Since I'm running on a warm light, the colors will be warmer. That's Cat #1, Walker.

Looks like it's a regular trick. Maybe Doggo even thinks, "OK, let's do the thing with the mouth and the noise!"

I've posted about our kitty, Daphne, a few times in the thread over the years and wanted to give an update. Over the last month or so my wife and I noticed that she wasn't really herself. She was starting to vomit a little more often, maybe every few days, and thought she might have been eating plastic holiday decorations again or not liking her food. Things would seem to go back to normal and then she'd vomit again.

Over the last week or so, the vomiting frequency increased to maybe every day or two, so my wife made an appointment this past Monday for her to see the vet. Earliest they could see her was Wednesday. On Tuesday, Daphne vomited again, and then afterward was really lethargic. It was almost an immediate change. I got home from work that night and she hadn't moved from the bathroom rug my wife put her on a couple hours earlier. I came in to say hello like I always do, and she barely acknowledged I was there. It was clear she'd lost quite a bit of weight over only a few days.

On Wednesday, my wife took her to the vet and they found a lump in Daphne's stomach. After taking some x-rays, they informed us that she had pretty advanced cancer with a tumor in her stomach, but also that the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. Their opinion was that even if we had surgery to remove the tumor and took her to a feline oncologist for treatment on the rest, that the prognosis was very bleak and recommended that we put her down. My wife made an appointment for Friday morning so I could be there.

We were surprised and devastated. So were the vets. Daphne had just had her annual checkup in August, and they gave her a clean bill of health. The cancer was very aggressive and advanced very quickly. Only a couple weeks ago, we took the picture I uploaded below with her ears rolled back. (I always thought Daphne looked hilarious like that and she begrudgingly obliged.)

Thursday was my birthday, and was a very bleak day. That morning before work Daphne came up to me in the bed and climbed on my chest and purred and purred for about 20 minutes. I had a good cry while it was happening. This was the last time I'd hear her purr. I left the office a bit early that day so I could spend some extra time with Daphne that evening. She was even more lethargic and out of it than when I left that morning.

On Friday morning, we had our appointment with the vet. Before leaving, we gave her a tour of the apartment and reminded her of her favorite things/places and talked about some of our favorite memories there. At the vet, we had some alone time and said our goodbyes. The vets were very supportive, and my little girl was very sweet as she could tell that my wife and I were having a very hard time. One moment Daphne was there, trying to climb off the table while heavily sedated, and the next moment she was gone. I got to hold her little paw throughout the process, and we sent her off into the next life.

When we first adopted Daphne in 2012, she was malnourished and we think she was abused by her previous owners. She was scared to death in our apartment as we lived on a busy street. Within a short time, she would spend hours in the windows watching the cars she used to be so scared of. She was a very loving kitty and loved being around people. Dog-like even. She would run up to the door when the doorbell rang or someone knocked. She would cuddle with visitors. She would fetch things when I would throw them. She even buried our laundry change and shower drain cover under rugs. When my wife was expecting, she would lay on her tummy and purr and purr. When we brought our daughter home from the hospital, she would come alert us if she heard the baby cry and a number of times we found her little toy mouse underneath the rocker. We like to think she was trying to give her favorite possession to our daughter to welcome her into our family. She was my first pet, and she helped me prepare to be a father, especially by teaching me patience. Our home feels super empty without her. She was a big part of our lives, as we adopted her after we moved thousands of miles away from family for graduate school and beginning my career. She loved and supported us through a number of major life events. We really miss her, but I'm glad she doesn't have to hurt anymore.

Thanks to anyone that read this. I know it's long, and I needed to get this out.

I am so f'ing sorry, zonto. For whatever it's worth, I know she had a happy life and that if there is a place to come after, she'll be there waiting for you.

That was hard for me to read, Z. Well, not hard per se, but I was very moved. I am very sorry for your loss. Sounds like she was a great friend.

And my condolences as well @zonto. It's tough. All of us who've lost a pet know this all too well. It's a terrible process to have to go through.

There are simply no words that could help, but knowing that others are touched by your pain can sometimes give comfort. Such a sad end to a beautiful cat, but it's obvious that she was deeply loved, at least since 2012. My condolences.

@zonto I'm so sorry for your loss. Like others, I'm deeply touched and its difficult to write a response. I know we only have a year or two with our pup left (she's hitting 16 and showing it) and things like this cross my mind frequently lately. Daphne most certainly was loved and had a good loving family and home. You gave her the dignity she deserved and I'm sure you feel her love across the pet rainbow. RIP Daphne and condolences to your family @zonto.

I'm very sorry for you loss Zonto. Friday was exactly 8 months since I had to make that same heartbreaking decision and I know there is nothing anyone can say to lessen the hurt. You did a wonderful thing taking her in and giving her the good life that she deserved and nothing can ever take that away. They say that in the end we take on their pain so they don't have to suffer. I wish you and your family peace as you grieve and heal.

Sorry about Daphne @zonto, we put our Lois down in July. She was 17 or 18 ? She was my girlfriends cat but she became mine as well the 10 years we'd been together. It was pretty tough, my GF couldn't be in the room. She said her goodbyes in tears and I stayed with Lois holding her paw much like you did.

I swear when we got up that day Lois knew what was up. She had been pretty lethargic and sicker the last few days of her life and it seemed like she wanted to make us happy one last day and seemed almost normal. She was in the cat carrier when I woke up that day with the door open and came to sit with me right away.

She had hyperthyroidism, which is fairly common I guess. when she first got sick about 2 years ago she did not seem like she would pull through. She got better for 4 weeks or so then relapsed badly. After experimenting with different medications and applications of meds she was very healthy and active until about the beginning of 2019. We were all surprised how well she did but we knew it wouldn't be long. It was pretty tough for both of us, miss all her weird cat behaviors and personality. She was more of a loaner only liked us and the lady next door. She loved us though and would play like a kitten even at her age and run around all silly. She had these squishy little balls she loved to play with and chase around. I still hear her meow sometimes... we miss her

So sorry, zonto. It's an awful decision to have to make, but you had to do it. I'm sure Daphne had the best possible cat life with you and your family.

This typing may be a little bit smudged. I'm sure the same goes for the other replies too.
