Except he'd like driving planars with the future amp. I had the vallhala 2 along whit my LCD-X and it was not a good combination, at least to me. The bass was really loose.
I'd stay away from the Valhalla 2 or most OTLs for planars.

Dude, we could just meet up for a coffee and go over stuff. I'm sure I've got a stack of books and PDFs that I can throw your way too.

The best book for learning electronics is The Art of Electronics, by Horowitz & Hill. You can't really learn the subject just by reading, but in my opinion that book is worth buying no matter what other electronics education you pursue.

The book will help you assemble a set of tools and components to experiment with, though I'd recommend getting a feel for how things work by taking a hands-on course at a local community college -- a little formal education at the start can make everything a lot easier later.

Believe me, I thought of you. Maybe I'll manage to find a day where I'm not working so we meet up.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I've seen that title come up often. I'd love to take a course, but time would definitely be a constraint. Hey, only 6 or 7 years until retirement. Maybe then.

I have a schiit Lyr 2 that I think has a dead left channel. I switched the tubes around and it was still the left side out. I assume that means it's not a tube?

What's likely to have failed and is it likely to be worth repairing cost wise?

    Hi friends,

Someone's offered to trade their Utopia + Cash for my Verite and I'm not sure what's the safest way to do a trade since I've never done one before. Or are trades just generally not recommended?

Be sure it's not this guy (from West Deptford, NJ) - or somebody like him:

Hi everybody. My best friends AV receiver has crapped out. He is looking at getting Yamaha RX-V685, Onkyo TX-NR686 or Sony STR-DN180. He wanted my opinion. Haven’t been into multi-channel in years. Anyone hear or know of these or have an opinion on the brand? Thanks.

I've been using Sony AV receivers for 20 years, since my dad gave me his old one back in 1999. Currently using a STR-DN840, and it has been great for the last 6 or 7 years.

Yamaha makes nice surround processors, but their amps sound too polite and mushy. Onkyos have nice features for the $$, but there were a lot of reliability complaints for a few years and I don't know if they're better now or not. I haven't had any experiences with Sony for too long to comment.

The last time I checked, most AV receiver brands didn't seem to build amps sections suitable for 4 ohm loads. I think Denon and Marantz might still rate their stuff into 4 ohms if that's a concern at all.

Thanks @crazychile. By too polite I assume it makes all recordings sound smoothed over and the treble mushy as in plankton free.

Also thanks @LetMeBeFrank! 20 years ago Sony was my first AV receiver.

edit; too polite can mean laid back, like your sitting in row M. Due to scooped midrange.

Basically yes, but I was thinking more along the lines of has no balls, no dynamics and just seems to have no will to live. This sound signature has been pretty common with Yamaha receivers since the late 80s.

I've had a Sony STRDN1050 for about 5 or 6 years and I really like it. Sounds great, easy to use.

The Denon I had before the Sony crapped out in two or three years.
