Yeah I could only hear the NUC fan running unless I was sitting at my desk, which is much closer to my audio rack than my listening position. I seem to be sensitive to higher-pitched fan noise in general, so YMMV. However, for an extra $100 I figured it was a relatively inexpensive way to provide that extra degree of quiet.

My core is with the router, nas and associated ups in the hallway by the kitchen.

If you can, moving the core somewhere you can't hear it is much cheaper than a silent case.

I thought about that but it doesn't make sense with the layout of my house. I needed the router in my office for other reasons. Is your Roon endpoint using a wifi bridge or something else?

Put some red nail polish on the blue LED. It will tone it down a bit.

Yeah I have a tiny piece of black gaffer tape on there now, but nail polish might be a more elegant solution, especially for a fancy night out on the town.

Do you see any demerit in running ROCK in shorter enclosure as compared to taller one? I see in Roon website they have linked the taller enclosure

If you want to run/install ROCK, the OS requires the entire drive that it is installed on (despite not taking up all the space)

Since the M.2 SSD drive is fully dedicated to the OS, if you want to have any music stored internally/locally on the core, will need the tall versions to provide the extra space for a 2.5" drive

You can use a short version if you have your music stored on external hard drives/USB sticks/etc

Roon has become an integral part of my music listening experience. I use it to stream music to Digione signature or Pi2AES or sometime to my iPad or phone. I was using my ever reliable MacBook Pro (late 2013) as the core. Never had any issue. No dropout or skip even when DSP was on. However my main issue was to keep my laptop on all the time connected to power and was worried about its battery, which btw still gives me close to 5.5 hrs. Since I’m a lifetime subscriber of Roon so I thought of getting a dedicated core for it and get done wit it. Ended up building a NUC based on suggestion by SBAF friends. I tried to snag one from used market but ended up getting new NUC8i5BEH, Tall version with 8GB memory module and 128GB SSD for M.2. Installing memory module and SSD was a breeze. No issues at all and took close to 10 - 15 mins. Then followed step by step instruction from ROON to set up ROCK. The whole process of setting up ROCK with assembly of NUC took around an hour or so. Only after setting it up, I realized how little music I really own. Most of my in-library albums are from Qobuz which will all go away once I cancel it. So my new year resolution, as fast as my Audiophillia goes, is to buy music if I get an itch to buy new cable or hardware. Also I realized i5 is more of an overkill for me and I could have easily set it up and lived happily with i3.

I do have one question however is there a way to connect Core through WiFi. I only see Ethernet as an option in Network option of ROCK. WiFi module is enabled thru BIOS.

You don’t see the “Wireless” tab when you visit the ROCK IP address?

No, it’s not there for me. I downloaded the latest ROCK build and updated to latest BIOS. ROCK build is 183

Hmm, best to check the Roon Labs community support pages and see if they’re saying anything, or post your issue. You said you have “WLAN” enabled in the Bios? How long have the NUC8s been out? Maybe there’s a hardware compatibility issue...

Thanks Just checked with Roon and it seems WiFi is not supported in NUC8. It seems many complained for WiFi issues so they deliberately removed the support for WiFi module of NUC 8 and above so that people stick with wired Ethernet connection.

Would Roon be a waste of time for me if most of my music is CD's that I rip as a single track and lots of 2 hour podcasts? Is it meant for regular albums only? I have plenty of those also, but my main focus is listening to CD's that I treat as a singular whole. (DJ mixes)

The only reason I am looking into Roon is that it offers built in network capable PEQ settings for my Squeebox or if I build a Pi device.

Roon is a good player if you have very large library of local files or if you have subscribed to Qobuz or tidal. I like Roon for how it manages the library for eg if you have multiple version of same album in say, 16/44 or 24/96, It will appear as one album and you can set the priority of which version should play by default. I also like Metadata and timed Lyrics it provides. Ability to stream to multiple devices at once with core taking care of the DSP in case you run it. For eg in case you want to run some DSP for Qobuz while listening thru iPhone, you can stream Qobuz thru roon with roon core running DSP and streaming to your Iphone. Also you can Tag files, create Focus listening etc.

How many DJ mixes? If it's 100s then I think Roon would still be very useful. If it's 10s then perhaps not so much.

But there's also Roon's DSP engine, which I find easier to use than most. (I use it to smooth a couple of room nodes in the bass response.)

And every time I'm in the car I miss Roon's volume levelling. (If all your DJ mixes are already volume levelled then again that might not be an issue.)

Jeff - lets call it in the thousands. I have every aired episode of BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix and every podcast from multiple online sources (Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Balance, FACT, Smoke Machine, Kiss 100 / Transitions John Digweed, etc.)

If those sources have metadata along with the episodes (artists, DJs, images, etc.), then yeah, I think Roon would definitely be worthwhile.

Thank you. I'll give it a trial run. Hopefully I can find a discount code that brings it back to the price it was last year.
