This link is to an article that talks about ways to use the USB pi zero as various devices. One of them is a headphone, so that is essentially an endpoint and would work with the PI2AES. It is not something that I have ever tested however.

There are no USB inputs (nor outputs) on the Pi2AES HAT itself. The manual for the Pi@aes is located here -http://www.pi2design.com/uploads/4/8/5/3/48531975/pi2aes_hw_ref_manual_p3_1.pdf . Take a look a page 6.

You do have the four USB inputs on the base RPI card that provides audio information to the Pi2AES HAT. Depending on the distro you use, you mave have to go into the settings menu to setup the Macbook as the source.

Update - Hands and Michael's update had not posted to my computer when I responded. My post is redundant. Trying to delete

Pi2AES with Pi4B in Pi 2 Design acrylic case, powered by Mean Well SMPS. RopieeeXL reports 65C CPU temperature. That's within spec (80C is when throttling starts) but ambient temperature is around 18C. Wondering about what will happen in the summer when ambient temperature will go above 25C. The standard finned heatsink that came with the Pi4B seems too tall (12mm) to fit safely under the Pi2AES. Just ordered this heatsink kit that seems to fit better. I'll install and check temperature.

I guess Pi4B run hotter in comparison to 3B +. With 3B+ it reaches to 54~56 at max. During summer time it would reach close to 60.

We have been developing a DAC add-on for the PI2AES. It will plug into the 16-pin I2S header and provide Stereo output, 2.1Vrms @ 0dBFS. We have finished the final prototypes and the results are very good. The protos measure -110dB or better, though that might be a bit lower (or better) once we have production units for test. Specs and a data sheet are on our web at:

    http://www.pi2design.com/coming-soon.html

The main idea is to drive powered speakers and small amps while the digital output goes to your main audio chain. We are hoping to offer it at $109, but won't know for sure until we have all our final parts costs. China being a mess right now means we can't get quotes from those suppliers, only US or EU. Since most chips are made and/or packaged in Asia, they are much lower cost from there.

When we roll it out we will be offering a 20% discount for SBAF members. We will also insure we get a unit into the capable hands of @purr1n for testing (hopefully they are willing).

    Cheers,
    Michael

P.S. Obviously you will need a PI and a PI2AES to use this board.

Here is the easy guide that explains what it is and how to put one together:

Updated ones should have gone out earlier this week. I will check with my production manager to make sure.

The idea of having both analogue out and digital out is great - means being able to have a quick turn-it-on-and-it-plays option as well as being able to use an off-board DAC on other occasions. I suspect I know the answer to this already, but I don't suppose it will fit with the RJ45 board in place will it?

Sadly it will not. They occupy the same header.

@Michael Kelly, question. Can RJ45 and Hdmi i2s be used at the same time? Want to feed i2s signal to two dacs.

One last question, any way to make a second hdmi adapter similar to the RJ45 adapter you built? For those who have two i2s hdmi devices?

    Thanks

Yes. It’s doable. But what is the demand?

Would really appreciate your impressions (in another thread) comparisons the AES to I2S differences in Jade (I have Onyx) :)

Just uploaded the acrylic case files for the PI2AES. They are in dxf format and cover both the PI3 and PI4. There is also the rear panel for the PI2AES-RJ45 adapter. Note that this design is not compatible with the old case. it is a new design with changes to support the upcoming PI2AES-AKM DAC and some small improvements regarding the SD Card access.

    http://www.pi2design.com/uploads/4/8/5/3/48531975/pi2aes-akm_case_p1.zip

This will be shipped with all new and current orders going out from this point forward.

    Cheers,
    Michael
