Java. Rocket fuel. Liquid lightning. Mud. Wakey-juice. Perky. Water of Life - that's right, I'm talking about Coffee!

This is another potentially expensive & obsessive hobby. Whether you've got a favourite coffee-shop, have an expensive home set-up, use instant-coffee, or you roast your own single-origin organic beans on some kind of semi-lethal modded popcorn maker - lets hear about it.

    What are you all drinking?

    Pour over.

Relatively affordable, zero maintenance, tweakable, repeatable. It's incredibly revealing (kind of like the HD800 of the coffee world) which isn't always a good thing. Not every coffee plays well, but once find a suitable source and nail your process you will definitely have some of those 'holy shit' moments...

Love the thread title, and greetings to my fellow coffee junkies! The wife and I aren't hip enough to have joined the pour over crowd, but we love our intelligentsia black cat beans, ground on a mazzer mini and pulled through a now ten year old rancilio silvia. Takes a little practice to consistently pull perfect manual shots with nice crema, but once you get the hang, there is nothing like starting the day with really good coffee.

The "espresso" produced in the major coffee chains is bitter swill by comparison.

I love coffee, cannot function without it. I like more expensive brands, but those are a rare treat for me -I usually have to stick with Folgers Colombian. But if I don't have my coffee all throughout the day, I am miserable.

    Edit:

Love the thread -I hope to learn about some new coffees.

LOL. That reminds me of a time when my friend and I were young (back in the 80's) and we saw one of those Freddy Krueger Movies where the kids ate tablespoons of coffee grounds and drank it down with cola - and we did it to mimic them -man we were up all night.

Using an Aeropress with some home roasted coffee from Sweet Maria's in Oakland. A super affordable way of making some good coffee.

Welcome fellow coffee lovers/addicts! I'm hoping to learn and get some inspiration too. Pour-over and aeropress are definitely tempting right now.

I got a Gaggia Classic espresso machine about a year ago and haven't really got to grips with it fully. I soon came to realise that the grinder is as important or possibly more important than the coffee-machine itself and that I'll need to drop a fair bit of money (maybe £300+) for a good one. I've been trying to use a hand-grinder but can't seem to dial in the grind accurately enough for my machine. Fresh pre-ground from local shops is too variable and the shots change quickly as the coffee loses freshness.

@dubiousmike - there's a lot of love out there for the Mazzers. I've been looking at a 2nd-hand one- what's it like to use in terms of general messiness and dosing? I'd only be pulling a couple of shots per day- would there be a lot of wastage?

My buddy's workplace sells La Colombe coffee, some of you may be familiar with it since the owner had a TV show. Anyway they started a method of serving coffee called "pour over" where you essentially grind the beans, place them in the filter that's shaped like a cone, and place the filter into a pouring glass. You then pour hot water over the beans and it drips through. It makes for a really nice cup of coffee.

    Here's a video

Favorite coffee would have to be Irving Farms Amaro Gayo (tastes like strawberry shortcake). For home I use a Baratza Encore grinder and either a clever coffee dripper or Bonavita TS1900. For travel, I bring an aeropress (w/ steel mesh filter) and a porlex hand grinder so I can get my fix on the go.

Have any of you guys delved into the mad world of Black Blood of the Earth yet? It's fantastic but quite expensive.

Conical burr grinders are great. I'm a lighter roast guy...love the ethiopian beans too. Yirgacheffe- Kochere is a favorite. Acid balance in the strawberry range and love the berry nose.

I like to order from Hub Coffee Roasters Nevada: http://www.hubcoffeeroasters.com (Try their Kochere when they have it.)
Verve in Santa Cruz makes some nice coffee locally: http://www.vervecoffeeroasters.com (Had a great holiday blend from them a couple of years ago and want to try more from them.)

Sweet Maria's is so cool for home roasting. Resisting urge to get a popcorn air popper and roast my own. Got my friend this sampler, it would be where I would start:

Dr. Higgs- I just ordered that Irving Farms Amaro Gayo, sounds like my kind of bean. Thanks! BBOTE? Interesting...

I mostly do pour over these days using beans from Tonx.org (now owned by Blue Bottle)

Had a great Kenyan from Blue Bottle: Kenya Muranga Gatubu. That one was pricey but great. Other Blue Bottle that I have tried have just been okay. Hoping Tonx means more good Blue Bottle choices.

Oh- at Hub, I prefer the Kochere to the Konga (both Yirgacheffes).

Does anyone know a good/cheap version of the Thermapen? Not gonna spend $175 on one!

Just get a meat thermometer, that's all the Thermapen is.

One of the best cups of coffee I've had is from my espro press I got as a wedding gift.

    http://espro.ca/espro-press/

Think of it like a French Press on steroids. It uses a double filter where the second layer is a micropore filter. The pot is vacuum insulated which retains the heat while brewing. For most french press pots like Bodum you need to serve the coffee soon or pour it out into another pot or else it will overbrew. With the Espro however coffee doesn't pass through the micropore filter unless you are pressing down, which means you can keep the coffee in the pot without worrying about it getting overbrewed. Since the espro is insulated the coffee will stay hot for a couple hours as well. I highly recommend it.

French press a.k.a. cafétière, I love that thing.

My humble Bodum does its job with gusto. When not using the French press I use a stainless steel Bialetti.

I use the popcorn popper and it's turned out great! It's super easy and it's nice to be able to mess with different kinds of roasts. Sweet Maria's variety pack was super helpful when I got started.
