It’s really all personal preference to be honest. I don’t really know much about budget basses but I’d try to track some of those down and play them in person and see which one speaks to you. I’ve heard great things about the Sire Marcus Miller basses but not sure about left handed models.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate the recommendation, Sire Marcus Miller does indeed make left handed models. I'll see if I can try these and other basses. Thank you again.

I actually purchased a cheaper bass for my nephew. He plays guitar but had been playing one of my bass guitars to get a feel for it. He asked his mom for a bass on his birthday and she had no money so I bought him the one he asked for. I was actually surprised when it arrived and I tested it out before tuning it and handing it over. Pretty nice bass for $299. He is left-handed as well. He is now signed with a record company and still using this bass even though he can afford something much nicer.

Squire Vintage Modified left-handed Jazz bass

I play a Fender Jazz bass myself and so I am a fan of this guitar and I found the Squire to be more than adequate.

That's good to hear, thank you for sharing your experience with this bass, I very much appreciate it. I'll go give one a whirl. I suspect I can get a sense of what it would be like if I were to try a right-handed bass and flip it over to play it left-handed (I'll be the Jimi Hendrix of basses at the Guitar Center, albeit an incompetent one who'll never get signed with a record company - congrats to your nephew, I hope he makes a big success of it!)

I'm looking to have a bass guitar setup at home. What features do you look for in a bass cabinet that would only be for studio recordings?

I’m over miking cabinets for bass recording. You can get a really great sound direct. My absolute favorite direct box is the REDDI tube direct box. It’s almost a grand new but man does it sound amazing. In my mind it blows away a lot of the other popular DI’s. I used to play through one live regularly sometimes supplementing with a Darkglass BK3 overdrive and a couple of other pedals for effects. If you mean that you want something more than headphones for monitoring I’d probably just go for something like 1 or 2 12” cabinets. I like the ones with the neodynium drivers like the GK Neos. They don’t cost an arm and a leg, they sound great and they are light. For the head there are so many options. Aguilar stuff sounds amazing. I like Markbass. You could totally simplify and get a little combo amp. Maybe just go to Guitar Center and try out a few. If you’re going to have it in the recording chain make sure it has a true direct out.

Most of my thinking is that I don’t really plan on doing live shows and want to focus on quality bass. I see a lot of different cabinets and I don’t know if bigger=better and smaller cabinets are compromised in some way; or if bigger cabinets are more for touring demands and they use something that sounds better for studio recordings.

    I think I might go with a 1 x 12” and DIY a build
