I disagree with my own statements too.

My statements were facetious and in jest to point out the dumbassery of people pointing fingers. I absolutely do not believe any of these leaders were incompetent, slow to respond, etc. This thing has moved so fast that it's been hard to respond. I'm working on the front lines in responding to this for my company. I wish I could have predicted the future three weeks ago (as would the CEO, COO, CIO, CTO, etc.) so it would not be right for me to point fingers at anyone else who may have of been seen as "slacking" or slow to respond. Given what we know now, we all were.

Armchair quarterbacks or midfielders are the worst in situations like this. If there is a sense of an edge or urgency in my tone, it's because there is. I will summarily ban people from SBAF (as I already have) if they want to turn it stupid.

Agreed on death toll especially given lack of testing kits. There's enough data to smooth out odd clusters in nursing homes or old people neighborhoods by now. By that measure, Trump is doing awesome given the number of metropolitan areas / international hubs in the USA. :) (I don't believe that either.)

Grocery store stocked like normal this morning. I did not see any rationing but I did not look at the TP.

The country the most inherently distrustful of China is the one doing the best, news at 11.

What works in Taiwan, Singapore, or South Korea cannot work here. I know, because I am an unruly American myself.

Waiting for our President to address the nation. We've started climbing the hockey stick proper today: 402 from 274. Time to brace.

    Update: 21 day nationwide lockdown.

So we’re going into an ‘intelligent lockdown’. One person in a family with a fever means everyone stays home. More than 3 people grouping up €400 fines each, breaking the 1,5m distance rule same fine. No more family trips to the supermarket.

Would have expected higher fines but in these times when people can’t work the effect is probably enough.

My province issued a state of emergency yesterday. The day before (Saturday) was a nice day out and everyone and their dogs (literally) ended up congregating in parks, beaches and trails.

The police showed up in some places and asked people to separate and/or disperse and were largely ignored because there were no laws in place to support enforcement.

So instead the Govt. brought a massive smackdown, which is definitely unfortunate but I support fully. We only had less than 30 confirmed cases in the province (of only around 1 million people), but they’re trying to prevent this from escalating as much as possible. Unfortunately some people just can help themselves, so everyone’s rights have to be limited.

    What they implemented:
    • Provincial borders will tighten to travellers and all entry points (land, sea, air) will be closely managed. Provincial residents should only leave if essential. Anyone entering the province will be stopped, questioned and told to self-isolate for 14 days. Exemptions for cross-border travel include healthy workers in trades and transportations sectors who move goods and people (e.g. truck drivers); healthy people going to work (e.g. health-care workers); and people travelling into the province for essential health services (e.g. chemotherapy treatment)
    • effective immediately, provincial parks, beaches and tourist attractions are closed. Provincial trails will remain open for exercise. Gathering limits and social distancing guidelines must be followed
    • police will be authorized to enforce orders if citizens, businesses do not practice social distancing and self-isolation, they will face fines of $1,000 for individuals and $7,500 for businesses
    • there are several groups who are essential and exempt from gathering limits. They include but are not limited to grocery stores, gas stations and pharmacies. If possible, one person per family should be designated to do these tasks. Other groups include construction sites, health-care services, community services (e.g. child protection), criminal justice services and law enforcement
    • effective immediately, social gatherings of more than five people are prohibited
    • any workplace or business that is not deemed essential can remain open as long as a two-metre or six-foot distance can be maintained. Workspaces must also be cleaned and disinfected at a minimum of twice daily or as required and employees follow proper hygiene
    • dentists can no longer practice dentistry in their offices unless they deem it necessary to perform an emergency dental procedure in the best interest of the patient’s health

Watching the news this weekend, they showed pictures of a crowded pier, and busy boardwalks on Saturday.
Pissing people off (rightfully so, IMHO).
Heard this morning they are some closing beach parking lots, and will likely do other things to discourage beach goers.

They are also trying to close a bunch of mountain trails, but that's going to be hard to do. I live really close to some of the trail heads.

What are you're guy's guesses as to when things are normal again? Quarantines lifted, everything is open for business, etc.? Hard to imagine all this not taking a minimum of 6 months.

Probably 18 months, but it will probably be 12 years or so before things are normal again. You can't just pop back from 30% (predicted) unemployment.

Depends if we find effective treatment before the vaccines, as that's still like 12-18 months away, depending on how fast we can scale production.

Minimum of 6 months, then years for the economy to recover.

The problem is going to be if people are able to travel and move about freely, I don’t know how it ever gets dealt with fully until a vaccine is found.

If clusters/areas (e.g. states, provinces, etc) can institute travel bans, and then lock down to contain things for a time and bring the numbers way under control, then you can at least start to open things up within those clusters, but travel between clusters needs to be limited until everyone has their shit together, which is going to be at least a year probably.

This is also interesting (still not good though)...depending on how much you trust the numbers of course

Also, how is Mexico only at 316 cases?? Lack of testing? Lack of reporting? Drug lords taking out anyone who coughs in public?
