Masks are not necessary when you can be caned for not washing your hands or sneezing the wrong way.

My parents sent me masks, but keep I distance if I am every outside. I don't take the subway or public transport either. LOL. El Lay is dense, but isn't anywhere as dense as Taipei, HK, or Tokyo.

This should be fairly up to date for today. I will update today's numbers tomorrow if there are more reported deaths. There is a little uptick today. Again, not enough numbers yet so there will be some noise.

Again, there are deaths, which could be more a more accurate indicate of infection given the spotty testing in the USA, albeit with lag time.

If you haven't seen it: pretty comprehensive project tracking data for all 50 states. Raw data available in a spreadsheet or via JSON API. Has sourcing for where everything is coming from and grades for data quality. Best comprehensive data source for the US I've seen.

If you have masks use them, it doesn’t do anybody any good if another person gets sick. The only reason they said for people not to wear them was to try to preserve the supply for health care workers and first responders, but obviously if they work for them they’ll work for you. The CDC is now considering recommending everyone wear some type of face covering, but still not the actually effective n95 masks which are in very short supply.

N95 masks are also not easy to wear correctly - they're not one-size-fits-all, you need fitting advice and then training on how to wear one or its useless.

We are seeing lots of folks mis-using masks and gloves. Frequently touching the masks, readjusting, and reusing without decontamination and the same with gloves. The health recommendation now in SA has changed to say do NOT use masks or gloves unless you know how to use them correctly and have ample supply (required to use them correctly). Rather wash hands frequently, sanitize and don't touch your damn face.

I see people wearing them inside out all the time. Even at the Chinese grocery store!

I've also seen people wear them stacked on top of each other, with tissues jammed underneath them, and one time, worn sideways. This last one was with N95, not surgical, instead of both straps looping tightly around the back of the guy's head, he had one strap around each ear like a surgical masks.

One reasonably common mask out here is by a company called Pitta, they're about USD 5 each. I checked one out in a store, and it's made from a single layer of open cell foam, so it's essentially a thin layer of sponge, so it's purely cosmetic.

Edit a day later: Just went out for a walk, someone coming the other way had her mask dangling from her hand. So as we passed, she held it up in front of her mouth, maybe an inch off her face. It was so weird.

Thanks. I'll get to work getting some insights. I think you knew I couldn't resist. Of particular interest to me is the acceleration or deceleration of deaths and put into the context of per 1M population. It's frightening. Taking off the ignorance no-see no-hear hat...

Deaths per 1M per day by State. Things look a bit different when population is taken into account. Looks like NY could be decelerating. CT doesn't look as bad as it did earlier. Other than NY, lots of noise throughout. LA (Louisiana) and MI trends look disturbing.

The problem with this line of reasoning is that improperly wearing a mask provides better protection than not wearing one at all. Same with reusing masks, some health care workers are having to do that now. Not ideal, but better than the alternative. If there were an infinite supply of n95 masks there wouldn’t be any question of what people should do.

The best thing to do is avoid situations where you might be exposed, but if you need to go out somewhere you’re going to be around other people and you have a mask then you should wear it.

Older patients probably die more often because the immune response decreases with age. Use appropriate supplements to boost your immune system if you are over 60. And everyone should be wearing masks. For an example of a country that has handled the crisis very well look at South Korea.

A possible issue could be that wearing a mask gives one a greater sense of protection, thus causing riskier behavior. It's kind of the like the old days of mountain biking: "Whoa, I got this bike helmet and now I feel I'm invincible and will do more risky shit like going down the hill faster, jumping bigger logs, and doing stuff that I would have never considered doing before."

"I have a mask, so I'm going to pack into that subway train now" vs staying away and not taking that unnecessary trip - which would have been x1000 safer. BTW, I've been holed up since the 11th.

Everytime I read some trusted source about masks, the upshot is that they do not give much protection, but if you are infected they give some protection, from you, to others.

They seem to make people feel better, though, both ways.

Look at what South Korea is doing. Everyone is wearing masks. They have been through pandemics before so they were better prepared than the US.

Look at what people in NY are doing as they watch the USN hospital ship anchor in the harbor.
