Hmm, okay, the consensus seems to be pretty unanimous here. I don't have a problem just waiting to have another $80-100 to spend on equipment - using a Hario Skerton Plus right now which suits my needs just fine. Having an automatic grinder is more of a luxury than anything else right now.

Thanks for all the input guys!

So what grinder are you going with? The encore?

I just bought an encore for pour-overs. I'm not sure whether in all the hobbies I've had I've ever come across such a unanimous recommendation as the encore for filter coffees. It felt so good to have a decision that was so easy to make compared to what we usually face! The other good thing about it is it's so ubiquitous, a lot of recipes will specify an encore grind setting. I find that really useful.

I'm very jealous of all of you that can handle caffeine. I love coffee, but I made myself sick on it for years... Just can't do it anymore. I drink decaf sometimes but it's just not the same.

Yup! I'll back burner it for a while as I save up. Gotta wait for my tax return.

This is what I use as well.

    It's fine for pour overs.

Maybe they've updated since I bought mine 5-10 years ago, but it fails pretty hard for coarse grinds and was the reason I went pour over rather than french press when I first started getting into coffee.

Wanting to try a manual grinder. I want something easy to use and doesn’t take take too long to grind for one cup. Willing to pay for speed.

Reasons- My wife is a super light sleeper and has a hard time getting back to sleep once woken and my reliable Baratza is just too loud to use daily before work and will be more useful on weekends where I have more than 1 cup.

I haven't bought one yet, but I've been eyeing the 1Zpresso JX:
    https://coffeechronicler.com/1zpresso-jx-review/
"It takes me about 25-30 seconds to grind my typical pour over dose of 20 grams of coffee. It’s by far the fastest manual grinder I have tried."

Nice, that’s the kinda speed I’m hoping for. Not very pricey either.

I was looking at the 1zpresso, but was hard to find the espresso capable pro version. For pour over, the non pro looks like a nice grinder.

I'm still very happy with my Kinu Phoenix. Just used it for espresso so far, takes about 40 secs to grind 17 grams. Espresso grinding takes longer too because you need to grind finer. I would expect similar times to the 1zpresso.
Did have a partial bean escape this morning, found it on the floor. The Kinu doesn't have a cover, so its possible for beans to pop out while you grind, but this is the first time I've noticed in about 10 uses.

My guilty pleasure today. I had an Indonesian or Malaysian instant ginger coffee, not bad.

Picked up the 1ZPresso JX direct from the company. Supply has been limited on and off due to the virus.

It’s a very nice grinder. The broken English instructions were a little frustrating at first but after watching one of their YouTube videos makes sense.

I haven’t timed it but speed is OK. The annoying part is dialing in the grind size. I’ve got my Baratza dialed in for Red Bird beans I typically buy. My first couple of cups were off, so I think I need to dial it back for a little coarser grind tomorrow. Otherwise build seems good and easy to clean.

Redbird is pretty much the only place I order from.
Just received 6 pounds of coffee, need to vacuum pack then freeze most of it.
May run out of food, but I'll still have coffee :D

The 1zpresso's looked really nice. Dialing in is harder on a manual grinder, its pretty easy to press a button on the Baratza and see if the grind size is good or not.

Thanks for the heads up on 1ZPresso JX availability. It was sold out everywhere when I was looking a few weeks ago. I ordered after seeing your post and received it yesterday. I was expecting shipment to take weeks, especially from Asia and with coronavirus disruption, but they sent it FedEx International Priority from Taiwan and it arrived after only 2 days transit. They also did not charge state sales tax, which even AliExpress is doing now.

I've been using a Porlex Mini (on the right) with my AeroPress for years. During the lockdown I wanted to get something that would grind faster. The 1ZPresso is both much faster and produces a more even grind. It will take a few days to dial in the grind setting.

At first I totally missed how to dial in the grind settings and was grinding much, much too fine. Once I realized full circle turns were involved, I finally got it figured out and dialed it in just right after a few days. Grind speed is very fast now and grind consistency is excellent.
