Finally got a grinder. My rationalization is when coffee gets scarce I will be able to make whatever I find. The cup is double wall Titanium and the coffee drip is also Ti. It fits under the grinder which is very convenient. I am drinking Organic Peruvian Single Origin.
PS: I know I better stop grinding near my amp.

getting a grinder and fresh roasted beans changes everything.

I have a double wall titanium Snow Peak mug that I take with me in all my travels or when I’m taking my coffee to-go (has a lid too). So light. It has been around the world with me multiple times. For daily drinking I much prefer the feel of a ceramic mug. I really hate drinking from tall, skinny travel tumblers with the sealed lid on. I want my nose down in that mug when I drink my coffee. :)

Since spending more time at home, I invested in some more coffee tools

Bought a 1.2L gooseneck spout stainless steel kettle (stovetop) for $10 and a copper colored coffee scale that has a timer function and temperature probe included for $17
Both from epay, cheap Chinese stuff.

Using a Hario plastic v60 and their filters

The gooseneck makes pouring much more precise, for both location and flow rates.

With the scale, I make sure the water is the right temp, it was too hot before. Using 93C water or so.

I'm grinding 20 grams beans to make 400 grams coffee. I've seen recipes that called for more like 25 gr beans, but I like 20g better. I do need to experiment more with this.

My pour overs are better and more consistent now, recommended

I have 2 other drippers not in the picture. One is a Hario copper and another is the origami dripper.
I pour about 60-80grams of beans per day, about 20grams/pour. 1/15 is my standard as of now.

What are your favourite coffee beans? Currently my fav. are from a local company called Coffee People, but I am looking for more good stuff.

I am working my way through Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting's catalog. So far, so good.

I'm a big fan of yesplz coffee subscription. I get a bag once a month to supplement the daily costco stuff. The mix changes all the time so you always get something different.

I don’t have one favorite coffee bean. I have had coffee from so many wonderful roasters. I order from Counter Culture and Topeca fairly regularly and I buy from locals Pinewood and Apex Roasters.

This morning I’m drinking a delicious Ethiopia Shakiso from Topeca. For me this Tulsa-based roaster sets themselves apart for a few reasons. 1. Knowledge and skill - their master roaster Ian Piccolo is like a wise Kung fu master of coffee roasting. Several levels above the average small roaster IMO. 2. They are a shining example of what a seed-to-cup relationship can become. They have had relationships helping a couple of farms in El Salvador develop their coffee beans to a high level of quality and increase their profits for many years. Their El Sal Manzano Natural is one of the results. A really great coffee for the price. 3. Their overall quality to price ratio is excellent. These are the things that have kept me coming back to them for years.

Counter Culture is also one the keeps the quality very high without going nuts on price. They have really, really tight quality control in place for what has become a large roaster. I have followed them and used their beans since they were just a small roaster and shop. I really hope they don’t sell out to a mega corporation like Blue Bottle (Nestle) or Stumptown (JAB Holdings Co.) did.

It was a fair bit of work but worth it. I eliminated all plastic in my coffee system. I previously had the Bodum French Press and got tired of replacing the glass when it broke so replaced it with a full stainless steel model that is also vacuum insulated. Mine is branded "Sterling Pro" but there are many on Amazon. I also changed my electric kettle for a manual one. You can taste the difference.

Disclaimer: My grinder has a plastic hopper but I grind to order and they are in the hopper less than a minute. Mostly the hot water/plastic interaction is what imparts the flavor.

My electric kettle (Bonavita) is all-metal where it contacts water. How do you handle temperature control?

The handle is an analog thermometer. I frequently overheat the water but it cools quick if I pull off the lid to let the steam escape.

Don’t talk to me in the a.m. before my first cup of Ethiopia Harrar from Armeno Coffee.
I lived within biking distance from them for many years; I miss picking it up still warm from the roaster.

I've got a Baratza Virtuoso on the way. For those of you with this or the Encore, any recommendations on grind size for pour overs?

I am using Sage/Stollar DuoTemp pro. Makes great coffee. I need to get a better grinder next. Mine does not do proper espresso fine grain so some beans do not work well with this.

Btw, I opened my DueTemp Pro, to clean some water scaling,. Really well built, no cheap questionable parts, so I expect it to last quite a bit for me. Only need to clean the machine every 1 to 2 months.

I have an Encore... I think I just leave it on the recommended grind size of 15. The manual has suggested grind sizes in it (last page):

I feel like they can vary. I have my Vario here in the US and my Virtuoso back in China so I couldn’t tell ya what mine is set on at the moment.
