My sense is that yeah, diversity diminishes. We all listen to TV, movies, etc. where there aren't many American regional accents anymore. If anything, it's more common to hear various English accents and Strine than Boston, NY, Philly, yunzer, etc. I get a kick out of visiting those places and listening to folks that still have a pronounced accent. Visit a market in any of them and you'll be mesmerized.

What's weird is there's a small city (city + surrounding area < 100k) near me which has a really strong/distinctive accent. Has to be related to early settlers there, shares some pronunciation with Amish/Mennonite and has some of the grammar differences. I suspect there are other places like it in the US; you'd probably never know unless you visited there.

Like "caramelo" without the "o", with an stupidly strong spanish accent, like Antonio Banderas with a single testicle.

    But... I'm confused...

Do you reserve that accent for the the word caramel, or do you ise it all the time?

All the time, is the accent version of "any color you want, as long as it's black" :bird:

Never really thought about it before but... If I'm talking about a piece of candy I say Care-a-muhl, and if I'm talking about caramel as something that goes on something else, like a caramel sauce, I say Car-muhl. There might be something wrong with me.

Car-mul; grew up in NM & TX. My wife does the NJ care-a-melle thing. At least she says water instead of wooder.

Partially raised by a southern grandma who grew up dirt poor (literally, the floor was dirt in her childhood home, her dad lost his peg leg gambling, the situation regularly requiring them to hunt & eat things like squirrel), and she always called it car-muhl, so that’s what’s stuck with me.

I was partially raised in GA & TN, but mostly lived in IL. My pronunciation sometimes depends on context. I’ll occasionally use care-a-melle or a variation on it if other folks are pronouncing it that way when I’m buying some sort of treat or ordering at a restaurant where they pronounce it that way.

Well, I never would have thought it... Had no idea that Americans spend so much time saying caramel! ;)

Sadly, no, and doubt that I'll manage it now (Limited resources mean that overseas trips are mostly back to my mother country to see people. Or somewhere near like Singapore)
    I didn't know that.

Should I be asking Canadians how they say maplesyrup?

I pronounce it "less." Proud Canadians have returned from home and proudly presented me with a bottle. I try to look pleased, knowing that it will live forever at the back of a cupboard. And yes, it was "the real stuff." Or so they claimed.

You're doing it wrong. Pour it over vanilla icecream, then with a spoon or stir-stick mix in a shot or two of white rum or, if you want a little citrus, Cointreau.

Damn, you should have told me that back in the days when I was still drinking rum and occasionally being given maple syrup!

I just didn't understand what I was supposed to do
