I caught up with the thread a bit later than others. Seeing your reactions to the other vehicles you tested, I figured the Supra would be up your alley. Driving dynamics most similar to the GT86 / FR-S, but with a ton more power. The 911 is spectacular and drives itself almost telepathically. The Cayman is fun with great mid-engine dynamics. The problem as you stated is that the Porsches are more tightly sprung them most people think. The Z4, Supra's sister is too BMW like. The C7 Vette rides a bit too "boomer" unless you have the Z06; however, those OHV motors are fantastic - just raw brute torque and immediate power.

I wouldn't worry about the "moar" power for next MY Supra. The 1/4 mile trap speeds from various sources tell me that the power for the 2020MY is vastly underrated (Toyota is known for doing this with their high HP cars because of Japanese stuff), therefore I bet the real extra power for MY 2021 will be more like 5-10hp.

I would also advise not to use piggyback systems or mod. None of this will matter on the street. And modern cars are nearly fully optimized, unlike a decade and a half ago where quick mods netted you an easy 50hp on top of 250hp. Your car stock will hit low 12s with trap speeds well over 110mph. Most people have no idea how fast (and dangerous) these cars already are.

    Or how interconnected everything is.

It's at the point where the suspension's dynamic camber/toe under force relies on the bushings flexing a certain way, and the angle at which the bushings are is carefully designed to preload them in order to shape the force curve they produce when the suspension moves to control the geometry.

Hard bushing swaps only make things worse, not only in comfort but grip too, and that's pretty common all across.

Change one thing and you have to change everything else because it was all designed in a single simulation.

Makes for insanely capable street cars, but also makes modifications and all or nothing affair.

I love all of that though. I'm not really a tinkerer at heart, I just want to buy a thing that works, at least for most stuff.

I'm a car guy in that I like cars and I enjoy driving them, but I don't work on them or want to mess with them really. I know most people are buying Supras to mod and whatnot, but I love how capable it is right now. Don't really see any reason to give it even more power I wont ever use on the street. It is already wildly fast, thank god for the HUD or I'd have speeding tickets already.

PPF might be hard to justify. Doing the entire car will transform the ownership experience: You won't care whether anyone leans against the car, you can wash it with a bucket and a dirty rag if you like, and of course you won't have to worry about rock-chip damage. But it's expensive -- I paid $7K with paint correction, and that wasn't even the highest quote. The Supra will probably cost less, but it'll still be a substantial sum.

For a lot less money, you could do just a couple of small areas: Lower portion of the nose, maybe just behind the rear wheels, whatever's the most vulnerable spot on that car. You'll be protected from the worst rock-chip damage but you'll still have to be as careful as always with the rest of the paint.

Your installer might suggest doing just half of the car -- the whole front end, rocker panels, maybe below the rear bumper -- which will protect from basically all rock chips but will cost "only" around half of the full-car price. Don't do that. It's the worst of both worlds: Still very expensive, and no protection from anything except rock chips; you still have to be careful with the paint.

Ceramic coating makes the car easier to clean and it makes it stay shiny longer between cleanings. It doesn't protect against chips at all, but with the money you save over PPF you'll be able to buy a lot of paint touch-up work. Having done all these options with various cars, I'd personally recommend the coating instead of PPF.

    ^^

If you're worried about paint - I'd say just get a PPF / clearbra after paint fully cures. Was "only" $500 for my front fender where most of the impact is anyways. The Supra should be about the same difficulty (per the shape) as the 240 so costs should be at least somewhat similar if you only do this area. Was another $100 to add strips to pretty much all the high impact/touch areas (for me) such as door sills, trunk ledge, the part of the trunk door I grab, etc. I didn't do more as I had my last car for almost 5 years and still hand minimal/no noticeable scratches (I wasn't super careful, etc). Barely even had paint swirls and all I did was use the 2 bucket system when I washed the car or use the drive thru washes were spray only (no giant brushes that hit the car).

I didn't get any color correction, etc. and even on the door sill where there is an obvious gap/seam, I and most people never really notice it. Pretty much invisible on the front bumper unless you look for it. FWIW car is also a bright color like yours.

Just take it for a spin around a road course where your car's paint will be christened by all sorts of pebbles and rubber debris at speed. Then you don't have to worry about it.

This is the most likely outcome tbh. the odds of me investing thousands of dollars into making sure the paint stays perfect are low. I wont even wash it often enough for the real car nuts to be happy. There also just seem to be too many compromises to the films and coatings

Yeah I thought about it, then I scratched the rear wheel arch backing out my garage 1wk into ownership and just said f**k it.

The local petrol station does a nice wash with no mechanical action, I just take it there 3-4 times a year, and all the dings and chips from backroad gravel are character.

i'd add that even if i didn't get ceramic coating or PPF, I'm one of those "car guys" that consistently favors a relatively filthy exterior vehicle and I prefer to just hose it off aside from anything i know will stain the paint, like bird shit. Folks out there washing and waxing every weekend don't understand proper paint care. They just like a diminishingly shiny car over time and an appearance of "care of ownership" to their neighbors.

Went on a 2 hours or so drive out through the hills west of Austin this evening from about 6-8, perfect time as it was the golden hour. There was about a 30 minute stretch where it was just me and a Lotus about the same color as me on the road. Tried to get him to pull over for a photo op, but he was uncooperative :/

Yalls will have to forgive me for posting too many pics of my car :D

edit: my route. The bit across the top from Cedar Park out to Marble Falls was the fun part, the rest was just getting there and getting back

Have to say, they really made the roofline with the 'vanishing' black a pillars work.

Saw a custom works ferrari with the same look and it was vomit-inducing, its not an easy aesthetic.

5 years ago I did a dream trip: went to munich to pick up a BMW M4 with special order paint. 40 minutes after pickup we were left lane cruising the autobahn and this small commuter car up ahead of us one lane over put on his left signal, moved into our lane, and then just kept going all way into the center barrier and almost flipped. That absolutely pelted my 40 min old paint with a shitton of rocks and debris. I pulled over later and there were multiple gouges through the clear coat on the hood and roof, not to mention the windshield. I freaked thefuck out.

Anyway, after spending 10 min getting over it, we decided to drive all over Europe cause fukit and when I got home I had tickets from 4 countries waiting for me - it was awesome. Ultimately I never had the paint fixed because I came to view it as battle patina and I always smiled everytime I noticed it.

So, yeah, there's nothing like a good christening of pebbles and rubber debris at speed to remind you why you're doing this in the first place.

So I have got a year until I graduate college. Once I graduate and get a real job I want to get a fun car to supplement my practical impreza hatch.
Ideas for fun, RWD, preferably Japanese cars that can be found cheap?
Preferable with pop up headlights because those are always fun.

That's what I was thinking, was just trying to see if there is anything else.
I do like the NA Miata though

I have looked at those, and they are so cool. I do really want one, but I also wanted to start to learn to work on cars, and something tells me a tiny jdm car wouldn't be the easiest to get parts for, work on, or modify. That autozam though.... So cool.

I'll probably end up getting a Miata or something and add a turbo or something.
