Schiit Modius DAC announced

Jason is a master at marketing. By designing and releasing a few new products that measure extremely well he is actually converting some Schiit haters into buyers. The ASR crowd is loving Modius. Not sure if they realize they are being played or not, works either way. T.M. Noble is doing a great job over there.

Actually I don’t think Schiit is “playing” anyone, which would imply they are being disingenuous or providing good measurements at the sacrifice of something else. They are simply going after a market that was going to the competition before, while still doing everything else they way they did before (great sound, great build, great price).

If anyone is “playing” the ASR crowd, it’s Topping.

 

I currently use a Topping D50s for a bedroom setup and would like to try out the Modius in its place. I do have some Schiit equipment in other parts of the house (Magni 3/Modi 3/Loki) that I am happy with. One feature of the Topping that I use often is using it as DAC for Tidal streaming from the iPhone 11 Pro. I use this this OTG Cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FLWN6G4/ and that works well. The cable also works with my ADI-2, but does not work with the Mass Drop Airist.

I would like to know if it would be possible to do the same with the Modius. Those of you that have received the Modius, have you tried using it as an external DAC for an iphone with an OTG cable? Since Modius only has microUSB connectors, it will need some adapters or a new cable. If you have a cable that works with the Modius, I'd be interested in knowing that as well.

I almost never click Amir stuff but I read that whole thread because of the Noble one. It's nice that everyone can play together. I'm going to have fun with comparing modi multi and modius.

 

Just a quick question/idea for anyone with engineering expertise. Would it be technically possible at all to use the expansion port found on the Asgard 3 and the Lyr 3 to add a balanced input card? Since it’s been established here that the Modius sounds better using its balanced output, it would be great to be able to use it with these two amps.

 

Possible is possible ... but search with "op amp summing" here. You will easily find an unanimous hatred. There's reason why people buy heavy and bulky (1:1) transformer for this purpose.

Or just use it with se. That's better than lowly done sum.

 

I think the Gungnir is now the oldest dac they have, generation-ally speaking. It's probably due for an upgrade soon.

 

Agree on Gungnir, also put the Mjolnir 2 on the list for oldest Amp at this point (or Valhalla 2, dunno which one came out first).

 

I'd rather see them release a Modius Maximus than a new Gungnir DS update, honestly.

 

I'd actually be a bit surprised if they haven't done a silent revision by now with 4490 chips or something similar to consolidate their BOM between products. I'm always seeing people open up their Bifrost or Modis to confirm changes, but not the Gungnir DS. Understandably I don't think Schiit wants to have people bothering them to upgrade to something that they don't think makes enough of a difference.

 

The Valhala 2 was announced in May 2014 and the Molnir 2 in August 2015.

I find the Vahalla confusing. First there was the Vahalla (one of Schiit's original products), then the Vahalla 2 but in September 2018 the 2 was dropped and it is back to Valhalla. One constant is the price, $350.

IIRC, @atomicbob did a topic on the cable vs the transformers. If the balanced cable is wired the correct way, it'll work correctly depending on the set up.
