I’m looking for a Gungnir Multibit A2 early version that is the opposite of A1 sound. I’m looking for the “Bleached“ version please.

I believe there are A2 versions that sound similar to A1. I’m not looking for that version.

Hit me up here or PMs please.

    Thanks for looking:)

P.S. I’m looking for a plankton machine that makes me cry

I'm pretty sure mine was "bleached" though I'm not sure if that's the right word for it, maybe acid-washed? I sold mine to lcmusiclover, so maybe ping him and make an offer he can't refuse?

Oh, I hope Jason sees this thread.

Yggy3 ad copy: "Meet the new Yggdrasil 3. It's an absolute unit of a Plankton™ Machine that makes adults cry. Buy it now, or forever miss the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. And, it's assembled in America, because Bald Eagles.

Yggdrasil 3. The only DAC that does burnouts.*

    * — and, no, we're not talking a one-tire-dumpster-fire. These are legit double 1 rips like God himself intended in Gen1:1, Let there be burnouts."

There was plankton and there was chalk like midrange. I cried at latter. Then I sold it. It didn't fetch much, I cried again

I didn't even know what 'bleached' means in this context. Dug around a little and figured it out. Apparently I prefer 'bleached' sound as well. I do have to say that I don't hear that much difference between DACs (including A2 Gungnir Multibit vs A2 Yggdrasil) via only headphone listening. But I did prefer both Schiits to my more colorful Denafrips Pontus (since sold).

Apparently I have one of these. I am not interested in selling it at any price that I wouldn't feel was gouging, but if it helps you in your search, I think it was one of the first B s/n units. I received it late September of 2017. Hope it helps dude.

Edit: I was totally unaware that there were different A2 versions.

When did A2 switch from bleached to unbleached?

Don’t know, just something noted amongst locals who brought A2’s to a meet and they sounded different.

No inside information. No conspiracy theories. Just the triangulation of listening to a few recent Gungnir Multibit at a few local events. Much of this is boring, but I had ears on each box:
    • First event was a public event on August 18, 2018 - gracious to both Schiit and two of our locals who haul all the Schiit to these events. I had the opportunity to hear two separate setups, Chord 2Qute > BW2 and Gungnir Multibit > BW2. I decided at that meet event to sell my Chord and basically finish my search for a transportable, reasonably good source with Gungnir (having now sold my first generation to pursue other DAC options). Gungnir at the event was cold, though I did most of my listening near the end of the event. And I heard nothing odd - it was a “classic” Gungnir, engaging, easy sound.
    • Note, I was pretty familiar with Gungnir Multibit. I owned the first version, purchased literally the day it was announced. Sold it in Feb 2017. More recently, I warmed up a Gungnir Multibit (listened to it at length for a week on a Cavalli Glass, and took it to an event on a UPS) for a Schiit Kit setup at a large local audio event. This was just another in a series of listens. Heck, I tried to buy a used Gungnir, April 2018 from a Rando on Head-Fi, with the sale turning into a refund when someone offered him more (like 2X what I paid). Though the Gungnir at the event was cold, I heard nothing outside the bounds of what a normal Gungnir sounded like. And this was the kick, so I purchased a used Gungnir from a Friend (who happens to be the owner of this thread). And… it was a little different. Serial started with a 0. And though everyone says A1 were all warm, this was not the same warm, inviting sound I was expecting.
    • Another Friend suggested I seek A2. Now between the time I purchased (Sep 2018) and upgraded (Nov 2018), one of the guys at the Aug event also purchased a Gungnir - new. It was to him that I sent a PM, basically saying WTF! I could not get over his being “cool” about his recent Gungnir purchase. He was a pretty picky guy, and took time to choose. After hearing my new A2, my thoughts shared were Moffat could not have been at the helm that week. Don’t get me wrong - it was good! But it was way different than the “classic” phat sound I was used to hearing. And the clarity went up too!
    • I did not think much about this (perhaps a cold Gungnir sounded “classic” and warmed Gungnir had the “new” sound), when I went to the next mini-meet hosted by the owner of the new Gungnir “B”. At that meet, I did not take my Gungnir A2, because - well, why? I also did not listen to his Gungnir “B”, at the start of his meet - again, why? I was focussed on Soekris and other things there, which I had not heard (I had heard Soekris dac1421 and was focussed on the dac1541 at the meet). But when one of the good-ears compared Gungnir “B” against his Soekris dac1541, he and I had opposite opinions (from my home comparison Gungnir A2 against Soekris dac1421). But I was basically hearing the same from his dac1541 as I heard on dac1421. So I finally listened to this Gungnir “B” and I was floored. It was perhaps slightly improved, but still very much “classic” Gungnir.
    • Everyone thought I was crazy. Glad I hosted the next mini-meet, so we could compare Gungnir A2 and Gungnir “B”. Everyone now heard the delta. @Gaspasser was also at the event, but there were too many toys to listen to. Unison and non-Unison Yggdrasil A1 (before Unison was available). Yggdrasil A1 and A2. Af, BA, ZDS, S7, BW2. DNA Stratus and Dave. MHA100. Original Sennheiser Orpheus. I felt humble to sit in a corner and listen to a lowly Sony MDR-R10. Short story is that anyone who cared to listen agreed the two Gungnir were different.
    • At another more recent mini-meet (also having too many things to listen to) I heard another Gungnir “B” owned by @yotacowboy . I believe it was the only Gungnir there, but it sounded just like the A2. And the only suggestion to explain the sound is it was also one of the early ones. I know nothing more than what I heard.
Throughout all the listening, I had control of at least the amplifiers (BHA-1, BW2, DSHA-1, Glass) and familiar headphones (generally HD650K or HD580), always played with familiar music through G5 USB. Admittedly the most recent listen was the hardest (lots of background noise, and fewer songs - also a longer span of time since hearing a “classic” or really any version Gungnir) but the deltas are not subtle in most listening experiences - definitely there in focused, quiet, home listening.

Ok, now I am even more confused (and I assumed that was not possible). Sure glad i like mine, 'cause I sure as hell wouldn't know what to look for.

wow, thanks @sheldaze. I'm trying to figure out what I have which is a Gungnir "B" bought new in May 2018. It's difficult to know without having heard any other Gungnir.

Exactly, which is why I’m basically looking for someone who doesn’t like the sound of their Gungnir MB and wants to sell it. #shrug

Paired with my 45 amp and a stepped attenuator, my Gungnir always felt a little cold. The Bifrost 2 fit very well in that system. On the other hand, with the bottlehead SEX amp and HD650, the B2 was too lush, almost muddied in complex passages, whereas the Gungnir worked very well. Anyway, that make me think I may have the bleached version but I'm not looking to sell it now so I should stop posting off topic

@batriq you are posting valuable information (as always)
    I appreciate your contribution

In fact, your mentioning the S.E.X.amp reminds me I need to finish fixing mine.

Both A1 and A2 had issue. I had the A1 on loaner and while it didn't suck, bass quality wasn't very good. It was always fat no matter what you listen to.

I don't get why people call Yggdrasil fat sounding, Yggdrasil's bass is just about right.
    Fatter Yggdrasil's Bass = Gungnir MB A1 . Leaner Yggdrasil's bass = Gungnir MB A2
Then there was the grainy treble on the A1 which was almost fixed in the A2

Both A1 and A2 do have that continuity thing that Marv mentioned , which I understood when other DACs sounded relatively Empty (Maybe DS dacs give the perception of being cleaner than Schiit MB dacs for the same reason, no info = Blackness)
I didn't appreciate this quality of multibits back then but now I do and also think its a rarity having heard several dacs.

The major problem with A2 is lack of any kind of warmth in mid bass. Not that mid bass is thin kind, it just kinda decays too early and lacks some heft. This also affects the midrange. Modern music sounds alright, pick 50s-90s and the vocals sound too stressed (lacking foundation) and sometimes hard/papery
Also, cold start would mean timid sub bass. It really takes minimum a week to get any meaningful bass extension

    TLDR - Yggdrasil A1 >>> Gungnir MB A1/A2

Edit : Edited to full DAC names to honor the effort behind autocorrect code for Schiit dacs

    You are likely correct.
I’m also looking for Yggdrasil A1 and realizing differences between the firmware update on the Yggdrasil GS edition. It is an interesting learning experience to say the least.

On the same boat, it'll be either Yggdrasil A1 or the GS one of these days. I was very close to buying an Yggdrasil A1, missed by just few minutes. Ended up with both Gungnir MB A1(returned)/A2(Sold)

However, there haven't been any definitive A1 vs GS comparisons. FW changes sometime make as huge a difference as component change, and since we are talking about dacs it'll only amplify
