This sounds like the beginning of a sci-fi ecotragedy book. "Oops, we totally missed that connection. Now what?"

Señor beat me to saying it, haha. I'm fine with them being isolated to the wilderness, I just hate that I'm often woken up by insane itching in the middle of the night during hot summer months; electricity not so cheap that running AC cuz hiding under a thick blanket is feasible :p

Just to keep vaguely on-topic, more pics of happy doggo:

It's some time since I read anything about this, but, being in a tropical place with dangers of various mosquito-borne diseases, I do take an interest when I encounter mossie news. Yes, birds eat mosquitoes. There are fishes that eat mosquito larvae. But, if I remember this right, mosquitoes do not make a sufficiently major part of anybody's diet that that creature would suffer if they got eradicated tomorrow.

Anyway, science, being the server of economics these days, will be concentrating on the carriers of malaria, chikungunia, and the others. Unless they chance on some mossie super weapon, there will still be plenty of species left to irritate the hell out of us. And, while there always seems to be promising research going on, there are still plenty of mosquitoes who haven't heard about it yet.

Which leaves me wondering if the corona virus is going to get us before we get the mosquitoes.

Oh, yes, right... back to the dogs, cats, birds, goldfish, etc in our lives :)

Eh, it's ironic I make more of an effort to stay on-track with threads like these than the audio gear ones, but that just manages to convey volumes on me as a person I feel :D

I can't seem to find the exact piece I read on the topic before but this one does illustrate how a great many species to rely on mosquitoes and their larvae for sustenance and pollination prowess:

    https://www.nationalgeographic.com/...itoes-zika-virus-environment-science-animals/

Of course, there are as many pieces stating that the complete eradication of the species wouldn't result in any particularly significant ecological damage as those stating the opposite; the pragmatics and science of it all is well above my head so I'm deferring to expert opinion which is normally safe but seems rather divided here. That being the case I'm using the experience of being hospitalised for a month and apparently nearly dying of dengue at age 12 as fuel to tip the scales in favour of ending mosquitoes, much as I'm aware there may be guilt experienced should their extinction actually come to pass.

My lack of faith in our ability as a species to collate all variables wrt any particular question leads me to seriously doubt whether even the most expert among us really knows much of anything. We do seem to be pretty effing good at hubris though.

It is my expert assumption that humans are woefully bad at dealing with things beyond the present. We suck at history and planning equally. A coupla centuries ago we had this whole thing about 'enlightenment' and becoming 'more than animals' through progress of intellectual endeavors, but at best I think we've only convinced OURSELVES of this, with all of our fancy made-up words... this whole language thing we're so fond of. Because actually admitting that what we are capable of knowing is a drop in the bucket and we ultimately are not the masters of our own fates is scary as hell.

Today is Otis' birthday, he's 13 years old. Here's a pic of him at 8 weeks old with his "momma" Hazel.

I was lucky enough to get one of the ZDT Jr. amps after the hum issue was fixed. I love it. Alas, my unit has now developed an intermittent and strange, low, vibrating sound. It's not unpleasant - and is actually kind of comforting in a vaguely familiar sort of way - but it does detract a bit from quiet passages in music. When I can hear it, it's pretty much constant, but it tends to go away after a while for no apparent reason. Any ideas? I'm guessing it's not a ground loop, bad tube, or electromagnetic interference as I can hear it even when the amp's turned off.

I suspect the Furry Unit. Might be going into PUR mode. This, for these units, is a bit like an amp clipping, but without the unpleasantness.

This is my 10 year old greyhound Blaze. I never had a pet in my life until I met my wife, who had a black lab at the time. Blaze is our 4th dog (the lab and a previous greyhound have passed). For various reasons, Blaze is the dog I've been closest to.
    Blaze.jpeg

Blaze was a racer in Florida (76 races with 16 wins). His track name was "Flying Ironhorse". He was 3½ years old when we adopted him after his retirement from racing.

Blaze is now a tripod. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) a year ago and his leg was amputated.
    Blaze_tripod.jpg

It's been a challenging year. Osteosarcoma is common among greyhounds (our previous greyhound also had it), and diagnosis is like a death sentence. Amputation is more about relieving pain than eliminating the cancer, which will usually recur in the lungs. Blaze's osteosarcoma was caught very early and the vet is hopeful about his chances to stay in remission. However, he's also had a recurring infection in one of his paws that causes him to limp occasionally (on his 3 legs), and the vets are still trying to resolve it. Despite everything, Blaze has been a happy dog and has good energy and appetite.

Our other current dog is Nutmeg, a pitbull mix also 10 years old, whom we adopted (rescued) as a puppy.

They are both about 70 lbs each.

Hooray for greyhounds and pitbulls! My sister has always had pitbull mixes and they are absolutely the sweetest dogs. I hate what a bad a reputation they have, although that seems to have gotten better in recent years.

    Here are my greyhounds:
June is 11. Her registered name is Hank's Vicky, which is just a terrible name. She raced in Florida and ran 11 races, only winning 1, but she has never let that get her down. I didn't adopt her until she was 7, before which she lived with a family that had 3 kids in 3 years, and then with a family that had chickens. June has a very high prey drive, which led to some dead chickens, so she came to live with me. She had her inner front left toe amputated a couple years ago because of a cancerous growth, but we were very lucky to catch it before it had spread, and she's been great ever since.

Felicia (née Jax Felicia) is 4. She ran in 28 races in WV and won 4 of them. She is my foster fail and has been with me since November of last year, after coming directly from the racing kennel. Felicia is very much a velcro dog.

Here is a shot of both them in their natural state:
