Newb here and my fist post, I just bought a gungnir fairly recently. The seller said that he bought it May 2017, there is no B in front of the S#. So would this be an old gungnir? is there a way to find out without opening it up if its A1 or A2 or which version it is. Thanks and appreciate all the help.

Have you maybe thought to send an email to Schiit?

May 2017 and no B serial number is pretty much guaranteed to be an A1. Earliest known A2 were in the fall/winter 2017, and most were in early 2018. You could try Schiit, but I recall before someone saying they could not confirm this by serial number, but I could be wrong.

Should be A1, A2 had B serial number for sure.

In theory, the B s/n is the only way to tell from the outside. Since Schiit has not publicly admitted that such a thing even exists, you are S.O.L. Probably better to focus on whether you like the sound, whatever it is. Bought mine in September 2017, and it does have a B s/n. I don't know what the hell it is, but whatever it is, I am glad I got that one, because it is the only part of my system that I don't think regularly about how it could be improved.

There seem to be a consensus that the XLR output sound better than the RCA.
Has anyone tried XLR to SE adaptor from the gungnir MB? Quality improvement?

    Thanks!

There are opinions about it all over the forum. The consensus is yes, the adapters make an improvement for SE amps.

Maybe I am losing it, but I was under the impression that a transformer was required to do this safely.

You're not losing it. My brain is half asleep. Transformer is what I meant.

If someone sent an A1 Gungnir Multibit to Schiit for a Unison upgrade, any chance they’d get it back as an A2 if they asked really nicely?

Depending on your listening preferences, would you want that change (from A1 to A2)?

Thats a fair question. I’m combing through this thread to find descriptions of the difference. So far the main thing I’ve seen is better blackground.

Cooler/neutral-er tonality (less warm) and more square/dry attack and decay vs wetter on the A1 was my experience. And yes better blackground and cleaner sounding overall (especially in the highs).

You'll probably get the 0 volt glitch fix and dither changes firmware by default (but ask!)... they may plead the 5th on actual A2 boards... remember that was a silent upgrade! Don't think anyone knows if it has more current output ability (for pro 600ohm) like Yggdrasil A2.

Reading through the thread a bit, it sounds like I might actually prefer the A1 despite the more grey background...

Ask nicely for the SBAF special. However, make sure you really want A2 first.
