Not sure if I should get the not so great “reference” version or wait for a third party card. Last time I bought a reference card, had to throw away the cooler and do custom cooling.

I own a 1080 so a 3080 should be a nice upgrade. Hopefully we can find them. Expecting them to sell out pretty quickly

I'll be waiting for an Asus or EVGA card, I'm not a fan of the 12-pin power connector or the reference cooler.

I'm actually curious about the reference cooler. I've seen mods where they put tower coolers on gpus with great results. This is basically a tower with two finstacks bent horizontal.

It might surprise us and it does look cool, don't care at all about the 12pin since they include an adapter. And if you have a modular psu chances are there will be custom cables soon enough.

I think NVIDIA will, in 2021-ish, release a 3080TI. Like they have in the past. My 1080ti is still pushing 1440p with 100+ FPS on my games.

But before I fork out a house payment for a video card, I would like to see how AMD market presence plays out.

But damn that 3090 is tempting.

https://www.diabotical.com/ is now out and free to play

it's an arena shooter in the vein of Quake which has been in development for 7 years. recently I have been playing nothing but Quake Champions as nothing else gives the same adrenaline thrill and rush. sadly Bethesda has abandoned QC and it barely has a playerbase.

Diabotical is much more in line with Quake Live in terms of gameplay and design but with just enough interesting new additions to keep things fresh. the game is amazing and a blast to play for a FPS veteran like me. it is extremely polished and you can tell it was made with a lot of care and attention to what arena FPS players want, unlike the failure of QC.

    check it out!

I'm pretty late to this but I just found out a remake of my favorite game of all time (Half Life) was completed over a decade or so by a team of extremely ambitious modders. Got the Steam release this morning, and I'm floored by how comprehensive the remake is in terms of making the game feel modern. The highest nostalgic praise I can give is that this plays just how my rose-tinted memories of it feel in my head.

One of the things I love about this series is the insane level of detail the developers place into the world, like the marginalia on whiteboards in scientist's quarters. Like this, what appears to be a correct derivation of the Casimir effect (in the fictitious context of "anomalous materials", of course):

    Just amazing.

Edit: the remake is titled "Black Mesa"

I get that feeling... The 2000s games were great, they hit the nail on everything all the time. I was late for Half-Life. Half-Life 2 with expansions is still my fav. FPS no questions asked. It makes you think, it is engaging, instantly gets you into the story like you want to know more. IMO it still looks good in 2020 and this should say a lot about this thing. I am super bored by 95% of stuff coming out and not exaggerating. This year might be quite good in that sense.

Been playing through Super Metroid for the first time. I have no nostalgia for it and I think it’s an amazing game.

Some BVM crt goodness in the link below. Photos can’t convey how vibrant and beautiful the SNES color pallet can be.

Woopee, the same Neo-Geo Roms in another emulator box that is aimed for hipsters. We already know that the real SNK died a long time ago when they went into Bankruptcy 20+ years ago.

    Yes this is factual

But I am a sucker for all things neo geo unfort. At least I can sell my neo geo gold now.

Probably more aimed at gen X gamers than hipsters based on game vintage

My basement is basically a recreation of the late 80s/early 90s with an arcade and blockbuster video heh

Does anyone have any information about the USB DAC support for the upcoming Playstation 5? Since they removed the optical out, we will be forced to use HDMI extractors to get the signal to our DACs unless the PS5 has native USB Audio Class 2 support. The PS4 Slim only supported the UAC1 protocol, which is basically 1998 technology. It worked passably with DACs that support 24/96 only.

I have posed this question directly to Sony and they simply point me to their Playstation blog which of course does not say anything about it. They are being annoyingly secretive about this. The only people except them that may have a better idea about this would be the developers who have worked with the PS5 Dev Kit, but they are probably under some kind of NDA and do not want to get in trouble. Sigh.

At this point, the PS5 is already for sale and I have it preordered. I think it is unreasonable for Sony not to be transparent on the specs for the USB Audio support especially considering the fact that they took away the Toslink option.

While I'm researching the Switch Lite, I got a thing:

Oh great, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challenges for SNES.....

The Anbernic RG350M Handheld, based on the GCW Zero spec that is pretty outdated by now, but other manufacturers keep using the same specs more/less due to it is a known spec that developers been using for years, runs on the Opendingux OS for a while. Other Opendingux handles comes and goes over the years (GP2X Wiz, Cantoo, etc.). And I did consider picking up one of those handhelds over the years. However, I just haven't liked their button design that much over the years. Anbernic recently came out from China by using older tech for cheap, but trying to do some good design choices. Previously there was the the RG350 where the joystick layout is the XBOX/Nintendo one. Also, the body of the RG350 is plastic. The RG350M is Aluminum (hence, the M in the name), have access to both MicroSD card slots (one for OS storage and other for external storage), and the joystick layout is the Playstation one. This is more/less design for emulators and programs that run on the platform. On the front it looks like a Playstation controller, on top of the handheld are four trigger buttons that has R1/R2/L1/L2 (you might see where this is going).

Very important is the excellent 4:3 aspect ratio glass screen that runs 640 x 480. With that being said, most programs will not run on that resolution, but a few programs does. Since it is on Opendingux, you can load up Quake and Doom on this and blah blah blah. I can't stress this enough, buttons and the analogue stick is very very very solid, someone finally figure out how to make an Opendignux without sucking and fantastic for fighting games, arcade games, shooting games, etc. on the go.

Of course being from China, the QC on the hardware is pretty damn good for the price I paid for it from Amazon ($140), but the software experience of loading programs and it quirks is regular Chi-Fi stereotypes with odd design choices. There's two MicroSD as I stated before, and the slots are at the bottom of the unit. MircoSD Card slot 1 is for the OS, which I recommend as soon as you get the RG350M to swap out the Card due to being a knock-off brand and put in a new card and image it with the OS (either making a image copy of the original MicroSD card or getting it from online). MicroSD slot 2 is for External Storage (so majority of games). I put a 512 GB SD card in there due to I had one laying around, which is more than enough for all those CD heavy games.

So with everything I said above, this device is designed for emulation on the go at around 6-8 hour battery life where it can run 8-bit/16-bit consoles with near perfection, can run the Game Boy stuff up to Advance with near accuracy, run most 8-bit and 16-bit arcade games (CPS1, CPS2, Neo-Geo, etc.) and can run just about every single Playstation 1 title with few issues on some games. You want to play N64 and newer? Forget about it. Wanna play FF VII for the one millionth time on the toilet and your PSP/Vita is dead and you hate using a smartphone? This will work wonders. Wanna play vertical arcade games decently on this (using the Right-Joystick and buttons for vertical shooting games)? This will also work well for what it is.

Sorry for the picture bombs, here's the proof of concept:

Yep, it plays excellent here, even Wipeout3 does as well. Playstation holds a place in my heart.

f**k, R-Type Delta runs almost perfectly on this with very few graphic issues that doesn't effect gameplay.

If running Final Burn Alpha on this device, any vertical game like Batsugun - Toaplan/1993 Arcade will run vertical and be default you will use the Right-Stick for controlling your ship and the face buttons. This setup isn't bad at all, but D-Pads will always be better for these types of jobs on a handheld. Still enjoyable.

Screenshot from Osman/Cannon Dancer - Mitchell/1996 Arcade running perfectly on here. This is known as the spiritual sequel to Strider (since director of this game is the same director as the original Strider). This is much much better than Strider 2 for PS1. If you didn't know about this guy, TRY IT!

Hey look @neogeosnk and @zerodeefex, I can confirm RG350M is using the same CPU as the Neo Geo X, yet this is so much better than that POS IMO. Also, Neo-Geo stuff looks great on this device and I can do Kyo's, Goro's, and Ryo's specials on KOF 96-98 with the D-Pad (still never be great as NGPC Joystick or the Neo-Geo CD Joystick, but you get the point).

Yes, it does GBA nicely and takes advantage of the screen aspect ratio and 2x scaling without any ugly filters. GB/GBC same deal on this.

Since having the RG350M yesterday, I tried various of emulators and found most of them to run excellent. However, on the SNES side there is always a risk of a few games not working correctly (which that haven't happened to me yet). On Neo-Geo you have Final Burn Alpha and gngeo. gngeo is just about 100%, but for some reason it doesn't show the side status bars of Strikers 1945 Plus, but the same game playing on Final Burn Alpha it works 100%. Genesis/Megadrive/Game Gear/SMS stuff works just about 100%, and so does the PC Engine and PC Engine CD (with a weird method required in playing PC Engine CD titles).

Playstation on this is great. If you had a fetish for rumble controls, well the RG350G does have built-in Rumble. If using the Pcsx4all emulator (which has a special RG350M version taking advantage of its screen), games that supports vibration will make the RG350M rumble. With this device I can be away from my house and play some of my classic Playstation games that I care about. Wanna play the remake of Mad Stalker - Full Metal Force for PS1? This runs it great. Wipeout games, yep that runs. Tekken 3, well that's one of the lower points since the unit can't play that game 100%. Few games have issues with the emulation on this device, but the majority of PS1 games that I tried works great.

When getting the RG350M, you need to make sure the default apps includes with the device are current and also made for the RG350M (not the RG350 which actually has a 320 x 220 screen). For example, Genesis Plus GX that came with the RG350P was from 2016. Current version of this one is from 2019, which I updated.

One thing I wanna talk about for a bit is Final Burn Alpha on this. There are two versions of MAME for arcade games, but I stick to Final Burn Alpha since it focus on the arcade games that I like and it mostly runs them well (CPS1, CPS2, Neo-Geo, Toaplan games and games using their hardware, Various lower-end 16-bit arcade boards, NMK games, etc). However, not all the arcade hardware in Final Burn Alpha is optimized for the GCW Zero spec (Irem, later Taito F2/F3 hardware, some later Sega System 16 stuff, and almost all arcade games that uses a 32-bit CPU), which means they will run slow. They may never get them fully 100% due to the nature of the lower end CPU/SOC RG350M uses. However, for the game that it runs, it runs them well with no issues. You just can't beat playing Alien vs Predator or Puzzle Fighter on this sucker on the go. End of the day, I'm surprised on what games it runs and what games it doesn't run. I really can't complain, I can run Teki Paki while on the toliet wasting time. So sad this game was not popular in the puzzle game world back in the day.

Speaking of updating apps within MicroSD slot 1, you just can't plug it in the laptop/desktop and drag and drop. Nope, you have to plus the USB-C cable (which has two USB-C inputs for power/data transfer and one for OTG for storage or external controllers), and run a FTP program or Windows Explore with the IP address. Yes, FTP when RG350M is wired to your computer/laptop. Ughh... So there is a program on the RG350M called "Network." You turn it on and it shows the IP address for the FTP program (make sure you plug in the cable first before running the program). After you run the "Network" program and type in the IP address it given you onto your FTP program, you can access the files in the MicroSD slot 1 where the OS is stored. You can remove the included apps, and add new ones there. This is very important because you want to have the current apps, but you want to haves that have a RG350M version (ReGBA, Pcsx4all, Gambattle-DMS). I wish there was an easier way to do this part. With regards to storing games on MicroSD slot 2, you can take it out of the unit, plug it in your computer, and drag and drop, easy. However, you need to make that MicroSD card be formatting to FAT32. There's a program you need to get for this part, which I did on my 512 GB MicroSD card slot, I'll reference a link that explains about it in a guide at the end of this post.

If you hate the GUI that came with the RG350M, you can change it to something else. Guides are available to do this, but I'll keep the default one because while it is a little weird for some, it works well for me.

What to expect long term? While the QC appears to be good, people online where saying you need to be careful how you are charging the unit. Charging it from the wrong Volt/Amp (it recommends 5 Volt / 1 Amp for charging) can make the unit really hot and overheat. Most recommend to charge it from a desktop/laptop USB. So far I been using 5 Volt / 2 Amp and it works. The buttons and Joystick nubs are replaceable, which people are modding their RG350Ms to make it look more like a PS1, or just change the flavor of how the unit looks like. However, long term if how good the RG350M holds up is limited. There will always be a risk in buying one of these devices. If you know what you are doing and you take care of the unit, it should last for awhile. Also while the price might be kind of high for what it is, the better built quality and joystick layout + screen makes it worth it to me for those who want to play their older games on a 4:3 screen ratio. I really can't stress enough that I can play PS1 titles that I missed back in the day (due to overlooking back when I was collecting video games) on the toilet. This is also good if you hate playing games on a smartphone or you lost/broken your PSP/Vita.

If you are considering the RG350M, read this guide. This guide is very helpful and it will answer your questions. It does take some effort to set it up correctly, but it isn't bad.

@zerodeefex I was so meh when it had that one analog stick. Took forever to get a GCW Zero spec that I can play almost all the PS1 titles with the joysticks, and on top of that Vertical/Tate that doesn't suck.

@zerodeefex you prefer Lite over Regular for Handheld? How's the D-Pad position, is it too low? Fun fact: I don't have a TV anymore, so I prefer a handle experience.
