Honestly, I'd avoid them both and go Rythmik L12 for a mostly music use case. Even MSRP is $560 + tax (shipping to 48 baked in) and I prefer it to the SB2000

I have an SVS SB13-Ultra (replaced by the SB-3000), mostly for home theater, but I got a sealed version primary because I think it sounds better for music. I think that is general consensus (sealed for music, ported for HT). Rythmik and SVS are both very well respected brands. Monoprice is relatively new to mid-tier audio, so I would go with a more established brand. Hsu is also pretty good in this space.

One note is that the L12 does not give you a line-out, so no way to high-pass the monitors. Same thing on the Monoprice too. You'd be running the monitors full range and then low-passing the sub. Though it looks like the SVS SB-2000 contains RCA line-out, I don't see high-pass functionality for it, so may be a non-issue since you were already looking at these subs.

I only mention this as I've been researching powered monitors myself lately and see a lot of subwoofers in that industry (e.g., Focal Sub6 and Yamaha HS8S) contain dual XLR-in and -out and the ability to high-pass the connected monitors.

My mackie monitors have low cut off settings on the back that will hopefully work for this purpose. I might have to do a shit ton of reading and figure out what dsp is

Digital Signal Processing? I just read that they give you free ProTools plugins with these monitors. You mean that stuff?

No on the back of the monitors there’s a switch to roll off the bass higher if you have a sub connected. But if that doesn’t integrate well I may have to read up on dsp that everyone seems to be using to integrate subs and speakers. I have no idea what it is at the moment.

Mackies I think are like JBL and a bunch of other monitors - they are theoretically neutral away from boundaries and that switch is a shelf filter that compensates for positioning against a wall or in a corner (4π > 2π > π). Each step is just a few dB. To integrate with a sub, a miniDSP or similar will give you a line-level crossover at whatever frequency you want.

It must have a microphone that listens to the output and adjusts the bass level to be even. Basically 1) tries to overcome the size of the sub by making it sound bigger by using MaxxBass like they do on small Bluetooth speakers - generally a compressor or AGC (Automatic Gain Control), and it may actually 2) "listen" for room modes. Given Mackie's inexpensive nature, it might just be the first.

I know Apple or H/K had a patent for this kind of "feedback" using a mic and making adjustments to the bass level. Just some DSP trickery.

You can look up MaxxBass. It was created by Waves and was a recording to to beef up bass tracks that sounded too thin. However, across the whole spectrum and set to "stun" allows small handheld BT speakers actually have some semblance of bass. However, it can still apply to small subs. And your Mackie's HPF and LPF is likely also using DSP filtering and not any analog circuitry.

oh. no nothing that complex. It’s simply a switch that rolls off the bass at a higher frequency. It always I think rolls off the low end at a certain point to keep the woofer acting in its optimal range. But you can roll it off higher if you have a sub. And then hopefully dial the sub in to extend up to that same frequency. I don’t know yet. Dsp is probably better but sounds like a headache. Not going to tackle that one yet. Gotta figure out how to use a pi2aes first;)

MiniDSP works wonders with these small sub situations for integration.

Cayin N3Pro on sale from Musicteck for $379, inc. case, down from $518. I saw some potential interest in this portable tube device in the DAP talk thread (@Ksaurav402 and @Mystic?). Surprising that such a recent release would already be on sale, though.
