How many wires do you need all together? 5 correct? or just 4? Does it have a ground? Are there different cables for + and -. I've seen diagrams that say R+R-L+L- I know those are the locations they need to go but I can just wire any cable to the + or -? hellppppp

I am making an IEM cable and I am lost of how actually to solder it. I've looked online for atleast 6 hours trying to understand what I am doing but I am slow and I can't figure it out. So to wrap it up

    EDIT by @ultrabike.

Most of the portable players using 4.4mm are not using the ground pin.

So just 2 right wires and 2 left wires? No ground?

Is there a difference between the positive wire and negative wire?

Headphones will not use the ground, only L+, L-, R+, R-. What IEM are you using and what type of connector does it have? The connector should have two contacts which are + and -. If it is not labeled with +/- markings, you should be able to find a diagram of what is + and - for that type of connector.

Ooooooo I understand the + and - now. The connectors are on the way so I haven’t been able to look at them yet. But now it makes sense. So if I am using single strands of cable you by overseas I don’t know what it’s called OFC cooper blah blah blah and I had 8 total strands I would solder 2 strands to each point and then make sure they configure with the + - on the connector?

    Did I explain that correctly?

Each of your two IEM connectors will have two terminals, PLUS and MINUS.

You would wire the Right IEM connector's PLUS terminal to the Pentaconn plug's R+ terminal, the Right IEM connector's MINUS terminal to the Pentaconn plug's R- terminal, and then do the same for the Left IEM: IEM PLUS to L+, IEM MINUS to L-.

With 8-strand wire, you would just double-up each of those connections: Instead of one wire connecting each plug terminal to an IEM terminal, you'd have two wires making each connection.

Be aware, though, that it might not be easy to use 8-strand wire, because the Pentaconn plug's terminals will be very small and you may find that soldering two strands of wire to each of them is impossible. Many people feel that soldering even one strand to each terminal is frustratingly difficult. And of course IEM connectors are also small, so there might not be room for two strands per terminal (four strands per connector) on that end.

    Good luck.

If you plan on sticking around instead of leaving after you got what you wanted, please read the rules of the forum, introduce yourself, and don't start new threads when there are existing ones that are more appropriate (cable-building thread).

I'd also advise you get extra connectors and practice soldering if this is your first cable. Most pentaconn connectors don't have proper strain relief so you will have to be double sure you get strong joints (without melting the dielectric of your wires or the internals of the connectors).

I did introduce myself and if I don’t ask my question my way I won’t understand other people’s response.

I looked at the other threads and they still didn’t make sense to me so I made a post and thanks tk the gentlemen that answered I now understand it.

You said hi with no information about yourself, but whatever. My point was to ask questions in the appropriate threads, not start new ones. As you found out, there is a lot of helpful knowledge here, but it is only useful to everyone if reasonably organized. If every rando started a new thread for a question better off in an advice thread, useful threads that aggregate good info will get pushed down and harder to find or mods will have to do extra work to keep the forum clean.

Like I said, if you appreciate the info you got and want to stick around, try to get a feel for the place and be respectful of the community standards.

Huh? Are you the forum police? I've had nothing but respect for everyone here. What does it matter that I ask a question? You can't be this weird man. The social skills of a house cat. Can you just stop talking to me please.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are both of you ?

A bunch of weird dudes around here getting upset over someone asking a question. You're the reason why living in today's society sucks. You legit made a TL:DR QQing about someone asking a question and then proceeded to dislike their comments. I must say that's kind of pathetic.

    Later nerds!

Another excellent example of How (not) to Make Friends. Requesting @zerodeefex @ultrabike or somebody to please put this thread, and its originator, where they belong.

Permanently for the latter would be good. Whether s/he's really this stupid or this unsubtle at trolling, s/he's not likely to add any value here.
