I purchased the Ode. Very happy with it. It’s super quiet. So much so, I doubt I’ll use my hand grinder much anymore. It’s a much better grinder than my old, loud Baratza, which is on its way to a family member. I plan on picking up a Stagg EKG soon and upping my pour over game next.

Which Baratza did you have? I have an encore I use for filter coffee but have been eyeing these off. How do you find it for retention?

One of the things that puts me off though is they're $600 down here, which is not that far away from a used Niche Zero...

I had the Baratza Maestro. So far grind retention is much better than my old Baratza, but I’ve only had for a couple of days.

Fellow had a popup sale recently, so I was able to get it with 15% off their $299 retail price.

wow! Lots of new stuff out there ... I've got 8+ year old Baratza Virtuoso and Encore and then for multi-pound jobs I have a same vintage Compak k10.

I've never even heard of "retention" ... didn't know it was a thing, guess I've been outa the game too long! I have horsehair brushes and a small vacuum that I use before and after every use (and then grinder cleaner pellets every 6ish months), and I always sacrifice a scoop so maybe that eliminates any retention concerns?

On a separate note, I picked up a Hamilton Beach "scoop" single serve maker (i kinda got it free) and boy I'm pretty impressed with it for what it is! Not a half bad auto pour over - I still prefer manual but it's better than 99% of the pour overs I've gotten in a cafe!

The Maestro was the old entry level that was replaced by the encore, right?

Retention refers to how much grounds get caught in the grinder. It's particularly an issue if you use the same grinder for filter and espresso, because you have have to waste beans purging grounds after you reset. This is why the Zero is tempting for me. I currently have and Encore for filter and a Rancillio Rocky for espresso. A Zero could upgrade both of them.

Now that I understand your use case, I wanted to follow up and say- while the Ode retention is much less than the Baratza I owned, it’s still probably not good enough for your use case.

For filter it's less important (largely because process variation will trump grind variation), but the baller grinders really come into their own when dealing with espresso where the machine is much more consistent and grind variation can sometimes cause shot times to vary up to 5s.

@famish99 thats why i stick to the comandante. Use the rest of the money on nice beans and call it a day. I feel i dont really like espresso either because i prefer to not taste the oils/etc.

So after living with the Ode for about 2 weeks, I thought I’d follow up:
    - Love the big dial for choosing grind size. Easy to see, easy to set.
    - Still amazed at the low noise and ultra speedy grinding. This thing is very fast.
    - I no longer think retention is better than my old Baratza. Instead I’d say its actually pretty similar. It doesn’t seem to retain any in the burrs but rather at the bottom opening. Since it sits so low, it’s a little more awkward to get it all but I’ve slowly developed a repeatable method.
    - Flavor and consistency is a serious step up from my previous Baratza. I’m talking much more nuanced flavors and I’m getting them every single time. This makes it worth every penny.
    - It looks freaking great. I’m a sucker for well made, well designed, minimalistic gadgets. This has an almost Scandinavian feel which matches well with our Mid Century Modern house and decor.

After all this time, I just figured out I should try weighing my espresso shots to calculate the extraction ratio,
or shot weight / bean weight.

Initially it was a little high, so I have been adjusting, and got a ratio of 2.7 in a 35 sec shot.
I plan to play a little more, and see how I like it with this bean closer to 2.
I had been letting my shots run too long which resulted in a high ratio, and probably overextracted.

I also lost my bottomless portafilter (pretty sure it was the cleaning people), so waiting to get a new one from China.

Lastly, just figured out that there is a Klatch Coffee about 15 mins from work. Going to go there and buy some beans in the near future.

Really lastly, I found some info on adjusting my Baratza Vario to align it. Pretty sure my Vario isn't aligned that well, which is why it really never met my expectations.
    Vario alignment
Part of this includes buying a couple of metal parts from the Forte and swapping them into a Vario.
    Another project lol

On the espresso front, bought some Belle espresso beans from Klatch.
I also bought this fancy basket to try with the bottomless portafilter I have now
    baristapro 20g
Made a new WDT tool with a cork and 0.4 mm 3d printer cleaning needles
Mostly I am using it to help level, instead of deep stirring but will play with that some more.

But bottom line is my shots have been really good.

Still haven't adjust my vario yet, still hand grinding with my Kinu and that's been fine.

For work, I bought a Timemore Chestnut C2 to replace an older hario slim. The C2 is MUCH easier to grind with, and also produces a more consistent grind for drip. Found a place on Etsy (JBM) so didn't have to ship from China and cheaper than Amazon.

I am slowly drinking less cups of coffee a day. If I can average under 4 a day I will sleep better.

Just having fresh cup of dark roast filter coffee, nearly tripple espresso. (My coffee has to be strong.) Good coffee is like good wine (for me): it clears up my mind and I focus like a laser-guided missile.

I usually just have around 450ish ml in the morning. Occasionally will have a smaller cup in the afternoon.
