The recent talk of the Elekit 8600 amp got me to check out their site to see what's new. Wow, they have a new DIY phono pre for cheap. Hmmmmm, I dunno doesn't look that interesting, opamps, only 2 loadings for MC carts... BUT wait what's this? Two different power options, 12V DC or 5V from USB C!!! Elekit gives you the option of soldering in either of them to the board. That means you can use USB battery packs and avoid unnecessary power noise!!! SOLD, I contacted Victor at Elekit's main North American distributor, VK Music, and had a unit sent.

I butchered the enclosure, so I decide to test it without for the time being. Still a very very quiet background without the enclosure, extremely impressive. The tone is a little cooler than the Nighthawk at the same loading (100ohm), and similar gain. The bass is not as up front and punchy as the NH, neither are the mids. This gives the Elekit a bit more space and depth in comparison. If one was so inclined trying other opamps would tweak the sound further.

All in all, a fun little experiment that I will tinker with further over the next while.

Thx for the review. I hate drilling the boxes too.

Do you notice any change to the sound since, owing to break-in?
