I grabbed a few parts from Ikea last time I was in Denver. This easy stand was about $20. A drill is needed, but it's easy to put together. More on Ikea stands here.

This stand works well for large headphones, like the Utopia, or really thin, light headphones. With other headphones, the pads compress a little on the stand, and that is something I don't like. Still, for the Utopia or similar sized cans, this works really well, and I like the cord storage.

You could also use it for gaming headphones and put your controller in the hole.

Having a tube to support the headphones and using it for cable storage is a really good idea :)

I must be dense, but is there anything attaching the crock to the horizontal arm?

    Magic!

This is where you need the drill. You have to drill one or two holes in the bracket. I choose two. I should probably also add a locking washer.

And here I am like a neanderthal with an old cd spindle thumbtacked into the wall...

edit: for the younglings who don't know what that is, back in the day we bought blank cd/dvd's and "burned" copies of music and movies and other crap onto them. It was a one-way deal because you couldn't rewrite (at least not initially). The blanks came in a stack. Anyhow, this is what a spindle looks like:

Loctite is your friend. Use a mild-strength grade: it won't come undone until the day you want it to, but won't be too hard to unscrew if you do want.

    Brilliant!

Thank you, @AllanMarcus. I may just make one of these. I love making stuff. On the Loctite, use the Blue.

You could also use nylock nuts. They also have a more finished look.

The one on my shelf is "222." To the non-specialist, their huge range is utterly bewildering!
A nut is a nut. It goes well with a bolt, functionally and visually. And these nuts are not in a visible place anyway.

But for additional design nervosa: Use round-headed bolts with the nuts on the inside!

Yep. One of those great engineering achievements that doesn't actually work!

Anyone still suffering from obsessive over-engineering compulsion syndrome? Apparently this solution does work: Nord-Lock washers.

It does seem a bit small for my HD6xx but works fine for my HD 25

That one doesn't even look that nice, and it has a hard edge which will mess up the headband.

My main headphone stand is actually a banana hanger and a piece of cut pool noodle for cushion. Literally $2 total from the dollar store.

I actually have two fancy ohm shaped stands, but frankly the banana/pool noodle hanger works better, takes up less space, and fits both large and small headphones.

Unless moisture is a concern, in which case avoid all washers because that's just more entry points for water (and those nord-locks would be awful)

I'm actually using just my old Sennheiser hanger that clamps to the edge of my desk and leather cases for headphones not in use. Keeps the desk clear and the headphones dust and dent free.

I just like the idea of cheap, handmade stuff.

Instructions unclear. Accidentally swapped the bottles of lubricant and Loctite. Regrets have been had.
